New oncology unit opened in Paarl

It is with great joy and excitement that the Premier of the Western Cape, Me Helen Zille, accompanied by the Drakenstein Executive Mayor, Advocate Gesie van Deventer and Provincial Minister for Health, Nomafrench Mbombo, opened the Oncology Unit of the Cure Day St Stephens Hospital.

This oncology and sub-acute hospital is one of only 2 oncology treatment facilities in the province, the other being Tygervalley hospital. This new development is of critical importance to the town of Paarl as well as for cancer patients from across the Western Cape and the country. This privately owned hospital chain also brings additional economic potential to Drakenstein. Dr Litlhakanyane thanked the Mayor for the efficiency and professionalism with which she and the council have dealt with all the legal requirements and applications.

Nie net is erkenning gegee aan die top presterende skole nie, maar ook aan die skole wat die grootste verbetering in resultate getoon het. The adjustment budget for 20145/15 was tabled in Council. The highlights from the adjustment budget include

 For the first time, Drakenstein tables an adjustment budget that exceeds the R2 billion mark.

 The target for the capital spending is at least 96% according to the Service Delivery Budget Implementation Plan (SDBIP). Dra- kenstein is committed to exceed the 96% spending target.

 Contributing to the capital budget is additional funding of R2.4 million received from the Provincial Transport and Public Works De- partment.

 The National Treasury also approved a roll-over of R1.1million electrification grant to supply electricity infrastructure to low-cost hous- es and/or informal settlements.

 Savings on the capital budget through strict fiscal discipline will be used for traffic calming measures in Drakenstein to the value of R 1 million and the upgrading of sidewalks to the value of R 3 million.

 Savings in the operational budget due to strict fiscal discipline will be directed to cleaning-up projects R1.7 Million, maintenance of streets R1.8 million, maintenance of storm water systems, R440 thousand, provision for disaster relief R300 thousand, basic services to informal settlements R500 thousand, and rental stock maintenance R700 thousand. Drakenstein Municipality is inviting all its community members to take part and play an active role in the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and Budget Roadshow. The public will be engaged through public meetings in all 31 wards. One sector meeting will be hosted where all stakeholders such as businesses; media, NGO’s, CBO’s, FBO’s, Interested Parties and government sector departments are invited to attend.
