Hope Williams Originally an instrument for battle, the mace as an academic custom goes back to the I6th century. The first record of a mace awarded to a university occurred in 1589 when Queen Elizabeth I visited Oxford University. At a convocation held in her honor, Oxford students, speaking in Latin, lavished her with praise and flattery, pretending to love her. They assumed she was unfamiliar with Latin. As a gesture of thanks. Queen Elizabeth I gave an eloquent speech in flawless Latin and presented Oxford with her royal mace. In the second record of a mace awarded to a university. King Charles I presented his royal mace to the University of Cambridge in 1629. Thereafter it became customary for the mace to be used at academic ceremonies throughout Europe. The mace came into use in the United States during the 19th century.
