Suggested Book Lists for Rising First through Fifth Graders

Here you will find suggestions for books, authors, and book series, grouped by grade level. This list is by no means exhaustive, or complete, but merely suggestions of books that children in each grade may find enjoyable and of the appropriate level. Parents are encouraged to participate in the summer reading process (and reading all year around) by helping select appropriate books to read and to read to and read with their children.

FIRST GRADE

Most of the books that are on this list are on the first grade reading level. Students reading books from this list will be able to read most of the words by themselves or with a little help. We also know that reading with a parent or sibling is one of the best things in the world and listed below are several authors and books that first graders should enjoy. Rising first graders should read at least 10 minutes per day, or 1 hour per week.

SECOND GRADE

The reading level for the books on the reading list ranges from high first grade to low third grade. Reading with a parent or sibling is one of the best things in the world.
