It takes a provocative and groundbreaking creative filmmaker to make a breakthrough documentary.” – Tonya Mantooth, Executive & Artistic Director of San Diego International Film Festival "Essential and illuminating viewing for anyone touched by parenthood." – Carl Spence, Artistic Director, Seattle International Film Festival “In Utero exposed a science that I was not privy to. Director Kathleen Gyllenhaal put together an informative, fun and engaging film that challenges the status quo when it comes to child rearing. It was eye opening.” – Anderson Le, Director of Programming, Hawaii International Film Festival “Overall this is definitely one of the best documentaries I’ve seen in years. It has both: an eye- opening quality and a replay value.” – Anna Jozwiak, CPH:DOX “A mind bending look at just how early our life circumstances affect us, and why myths and fairy tales have the power to soothe us. An unmissable viewing experience if you have even an ounce of curiosity about the course of human events.” – Courtney Pledger, Executive Director, Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival “A damning exposé on the health care issues facing women today.

  • Steve's Film Festival Reviews 1993
Steve’s Film Festival Reviews 1993 [These reviews have been reformatted for Word. Note that there was a hiatus of reviews from 1988 to 1992, and this edition marks a return to publication.] September 23, 1993 (Rev.) (again) Yes, it's that time of year again, and I am actually going to publish my reviews this year, something I had fallen out of the habit of doing. Having promised this epic to so many people, now I have to deliver. The films are reviewed in the order in which I saw them, and so there is no pride of place to a review coming first or last. I have done this to give non-Festival goers something of the feeling of the ups and downs of attending the Festival -- the days you wish you had stayed in bed as well as those where the films just get better and better. My apologies to those of you who have heard pieces of some of the reviews before. It is an inevitable fact that when people ask you about what you have seen, you develop a canned response after a while, and some of those are here. Have patience and read on. Friday, September 10th ______________________ (1) "A Foreign Field", GB, Charles Sturridge, 1993. ___________________________________________________ This film looks interesting in the program -- Alec Guinness, Leo Kern, Jeanne Moreau, Lauren Bacall; distributed by The Sales Company, a usually reliable source of English films. Premise: two old soldiers (English and American) are off to France to look up an old flame from WWII who was a ministering angel of mercy to them in hospital (and probably a bit more as well), and who are both convinced that she loved only them.

PRESS KIT Upstream Cinema presents IN UTERO Directed by Kathleen Man Gyllenhaal Year: 2016 Running Time: 85 min Aspect ratio: 16:9 Publicity Contacts: Lisa Madison, [email protected] Sara Casey, [email protected] www.inuterofilm.com www.facebook.com/inuterofilm twitter.com/inuterofilm www.instagram.com/inuterofilm/ DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT How much are we constructed during the ten months we spend in our mother’s womb? Do we carry the trauma of our ancestors into our daily lives? Are we who we think we are? These questions not only preoccupied me during the making of IN UTERO, but gained a deeper resonance after I became pregnant with my son. In fact, I began researching the film while I was trying to get pregnant, shot the film during my pregnancy, and was deep in post-production when my son was born. I’ve always wanted to understand the cause of things. And since I was embarking on the biggest and most important journey of my life (becoming a mother), I wanted to understand everything I could about the relationship between a mother’s health and that of her growing fetus, so that I could lay a better foundation for conception and pregnancy. I read a wonderful book called Origins by Annie Murphy Paul, along with a lot of other articles, which opened up the world of developmental origins of health and disease. As my research continued, I kept seeing connections among all these different fields (epigenetics, epidemiology, psychology, neuroscience), and I thought, “This should be a documentary.” And when I saw that there really wasn’t any other documentary out there that was bringing together all this research, I decided to do it.

  • Inherent Vice: a Hidden Defect in a Good Or Property Which Causes Or Contributes to Its Deterioration, Damage, Or Wastage
PRODUCTION NOTES Inherent Vice: A hidden defect in a good or property which causes or contributes to its deterioration, damage, or wastage. These defects of an inherent nature make the item an unacceptable risk to a carrier or insurer. Examples of inherent vice include spontaneous combustion, rust, etc.

Tagline A bountiful lychee tree hanging over a neighbor’s fence causes a commotion among locals in contemporary Hawai’i. Synopsis In Hawai'i, the highly prized lychee tree blooms only once a year. Paranoid Arnie and Ethel vow to protect their fruit from lychee thieves...at any cost! Arnie and Ethel's feelings of suspicion are stirred when a Hawaiian stranger named Keoki (Pomaika'i Brown, 50 First Dates) offers to harvest their lychee. When Arnie's selfish impulses drive him to hire professional pickers for the task instead, Keoki realizes that their lives are being dictated by fear, and attempts to set things right. Lychee Thieves explores the often humorous – and sometimes contentious – interactions among the culturally and ethnically diverse people of Hawai’i. Its lush dream sequences take us from the mystical valleys of Hawai’i to ancient China, where a smitten emperor will stop at nothing to feed his lady’s lust for the rare fruit. An official selection at over 40 film festivals in 2010-2012 and winner of six festival awards, Lychee Thieves is a cautionary tale with universal appeal. The film was shot entirely on location on the island of O’ahu by Independent Spirit Award Nominee Anne Misawa (DP, Treeless Mountain) and features contemporary Hawaiian music by acclaimed musical artists Makana, Hapa, and Raiatea Helm. A homegrown film made within the Hawaiian film community by people from Hawai’i, Lychee Thieves delivers a uniquely multicultural experience that delights and inspires audiences around the globe.
