BEFORE THE Federal Communications Commission WASHINGTON, DC 20554 In the Matter of ) ) Elimination of Main Studio Rule ) MB Docket No. 17-106 ) ) ) ) To: The Commission COMMENTS OF THE CRAWFORD BROADCASTING COMPANY Crawford Broadcasting Company (“Crawford”) and its affiliates are licensees of 14 AM and 9 FM commercial broadcast stations1. As such, we have great interest in the Commission’s efforts to eliminate the main studio rule, and we applaud the Commission’s efforts in this matter. We tender the following comments in response to the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking. A. A Local Main Studio is Unnecessary for the Public to Participate in Programming Many of Crawford’s stations program “God and Country” formats consisting of either religious talk, political talk or a combination of the two. These stations feature live talk including on-air guests and callers. As such, our stations are often plugged into the local community much more than stations programming music and other entertainment formats. Voices of individuals from our communities are heard on many of our stations on a daily basis. It has been our experience in recent years that it is seldom necessary for people to come to our studios in order to participate in our programming. Just about anyone can call in by telephone and gain access, and others make use of audio-over-IP codecs and other devices to convey programming from their locations to our studios. Even some of our on-air hosts do not come into our studios daily but rather do their live shows from their homes using such codecs and other devices.

  • Bishop George R. Evans 1922-1985
“Servant of God and Man” is the motto Auxiliary Bishop George R. Evans chose to have affixed to his coat o f arms when he was elevated to the episcopacy of the Church on April 23, 1969, by Pope Paul VI. Fidelity to his chosen guiding principle earned for him the reputa tion as a “social action bishop.” A sensitive and caring man, he was always reticent about himself, preferring instead to praise the people with whom he worked. His deep concern for social justice issues came about in his first year as a bishop. Only seven months after his consecration as a bishop, he preached a sermon defending social activism and Church reform touched off by the modernization efforts o f the Second Vatican Council. Thereafter, he took highly public stands on the needs o f the poor, on housing issues, on women’s rights, on pro-life and the issue o f nuclear war. He spoke out against the M X missile, saying it went beyond any just defense. • 2015 Annual Report Forgotten by Everybody, I Think That Is a Much Greater Hunger, a Much Greater Poverty Than the Person Who Has Nothing to Eat.”
A message from the Executive Director Mother Theresa once said: “Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, 2015 Annual Report forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat.” Rather than being a food bank, I like to think of Bessie’s Hope as being a “love bank.” Our “shelves” are stocked with thousands of volunteers who share their love and caring with nursing home elders who hunger for unconditional love and attention. It is a sad fact that 60% of these elders receive no personal visits. In 2015, a total of 2,339 Bessie’s Hope volunteers logged 8,805 hours, visiting 1,451 nursing home residents, bringing with them smiles, hugs, conversation and most importantly love. The purpose of their visits is to fill these lonely residents’ hearts with a sense of feeling acknowledged, important and remembered. Thank you for your support in helping Bessie’s Hope continue to eradicate poverty of the soul. Our deepest thanks to those of you who supported Bessie’s Hope in 2015 with their monetary gifts, time and talents. My wish is that we could give Mission Statement each of you a hug of gratitude. Bessie’s Hope enhances the quality of life for nursing home/assisted-living elders and brings generations together in mutually rewarding relationships by honoring With gratitude, the human spirit and creating life-enriching volunteer Sharron Brandrup opportunities for youth, families, individuals, community Executive Director organizations and businesses.
