Fellow, New Leadership Academy, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (2019) The Fellows Program changes the expectations that surround leaders, leadership, and leadership development across higher education. Through several integrated programs and activities, including participation in a five-day summer institute held in Ann Arbor, the Fellowship experience will focus attention on what leaders do when they are in positions to influence events inside and surrounding their institutions.

U.S. Department of Education/Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (2016-2021) A grant of $1.75 million awarded over five years to support development and research on a two-semester junior-level transfer student Learning Community that includes integrating a new Career to College certificate program into the curriculum. See: $1.75 million grant to prepare students for careers.

U.S. Department of Education/Institute of Education Sciences (2016-2021) A grant of $895,000 to launch a project for student researchers called Pathways: Successful Transitions To and Through Higher Education. The Co-Principal Investigators are Dr. Jana Noel (Education) and Dr. Su Jin Jez (Public Policy). See: Sac State lands nearly $900,000 for new student research.

California Commission for Teacher Credentialing/Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP) A grant of $248,806 to develop a program for student earn a B.A. in Liberal Studies or Child Development with a preliminary multiple subject (MS) credential in four calendar years, adding a foundational level general science (FLGS) single subject credential in year 4.5.

California State University, Sacramento 2014 Research and Creativity Activity Awards Assigned time and to work with a university-wide advising committee and write a U.S. Department of Education Title III, Part A (Strengthening Institutions) grant proposal.

University of Pennsylvania and Lumina Foundation (2012) A grant of $50,000 as part of the “Models of Success” research project to support and promote best practice student retention and graduation activities.

U.S. Department of Education/Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (2011-2016) A grant of $1.8 million awarded over five years to support programs and research aimed at increasing university retention and graduation rates among underrepresented Asian American and Pacific Islander students. Community Engagement Faculty Fellow (2009-10) Faculty Fellows work to further community engagement opportunities within individual courses, help expand the University’s and community’s awareness of community engagement activities at the University and facilitate research on community engagement efforts across the University.

Crandell Faculty Advancement Award (2009-2010) A new awards program launched by the University Foundation at Sacramento encourages professors to come more involved in raising funds for their colleges and departments.

California State Library 2005-06 California Civil Liberties Public Education Program (CCLPEP) A grant of $59,810 awarded to fund preliminary efforts to organize Congressman Robert Matusi’s papers and documents pertaining to his work on Japanese American redress and reparations. California State University, Sacramento 2001-02 and 2000-01 Research and Creativity Activity Awards Assigned time and funding to support the project, “The Handbook of Research Methods for Ethnic Studies.” The result of this project will be a key reference book in ethnic studies and race relations research in the social sciences. It will identify the major strands of development in ethnic studies scholarship, capture “state-of-the-art” ethnic studies research, and project the directions into the future of ethnic studies as an academic discipline.

American Sociological Association/National Science Foundation Fund for the Advancement of the Discipline Grant: December 1995-December 1996 Funding awarded to continue research on multi-ethnic coalition politics in Oakland, California. This grant is intended to nurture the development of scientific knowledge by funding ground breaking research initiatives and other important scientific research.

California State University, Northridge 1994-95 New Faculty Research Competition Mini-Grant Assigned time awarded for ethnographic fieldwork in Oakland, California, on multi- ethnic coalition politics. Grant support for travel expenses to conduct oral history interviews, purchase transcription equipment, and pay student transcribers/research assistants.

California State University, Northridge 1994-95 Affirmative Action Faculty Development Program Assigned time from teaching during the spring 1995 semester awarded to support on- going research and to search for extramural funding.

University of California at Berkeley Chancellor's Dissertation Fellowship: August 1991-June 1992 The Fellowship was intended to assist in the completion of my Ph.D. dissertation. Dissertation completed May 1, 1992.

American Sociological Association Minority Fellowship: August 1990-May 1991 The Fellowship was intended to support ethnographic fieldwork in Monterey Park for doctoral dissertation. Methods included: participant observation, oral history interviews, and a detailed search of relevant historical and scholarly literature, government reports, and local, national and international newspaper accounts from the city of Monterey Park.

California State University Doctoral Incentive Program: August 1989-May 1992 The objective of the program is to support select California State University alumni and to increase the number of minority and women faculty members in underrepresented academic fields.
