I miss the days of sitting at the counter at Kresge’s department store food counter after shopping with mom. Our purpose was to have one of the following:……hot fudge sundaes, root beer floats and/or milk shakes. The milkshakes (strawberry) would leave flecks of fruit in your mouth and I would have brain freeze so bad for at least 5 minutes that I couldn’t even speak. When I came to my senses I realized that Mom and sis were laughing at me so hard that tears rolled down their checks. The root beer float was so full of seltzer that it tickled your nose as you bent to drink and ohhhhh, the smell of that root beer soda cannot be duplicated today. I miss the smell of the old time markets like Mohegan market that mom would shop at. You’d walk in and shuffle through sawdust on the floor and the pungency of all of the wonderful cheeses assaulted your senses as you neared the pungent salami and sausages hanging from the ceiling over barrels of imported black and red olives swimming in olive oil, whose scent landed on your tongue even if you “A Symbol of Excellence!” hadn’t eaten any yet. I would press my face against the bakery counter and my eyes were in wonderment of the fluffy clouds of frosting on brightly colored cakes. "A Republic, if you can keep it" Many readers will recognize the above quote as Ben Franklin's reply to a group of Patriots in Philadelphia at the conclusion of the Constitutional Convention in 1787. Given the ongoing disfunction between the two main political parties, herewith some thoughts on our founding for consideration, starting with the concept of "American Exceptionalism" Take a moment to look-up the definition of "exceptional". Many think it means "better than". What you will find is the word "unique" and that's how our Founders viewed "the colonies". Most of them were well-read, learning from both secular and religious history. Freedom and liberty were concepts hard to imagine among folks who'd known only monarchs or dictators as their rulers, but those were the driving forces that motivated and sustained our Founders and still inspire us today. For information about what you can do to advance and defend the Constitution, please call or text me at 860 - 280 -4865.
