Leading medical professionals, researchers, master teachers and authors will speak, guide demonstrations and participate in panel discussions on Saturday, March 25th, in an educational program offered by the Smithsonian Associates. March 26th, the second day, is devoted to experiential master classes and inten- sive trainings offered through Therapeutic Yoga of Greater Washington and her partners.

DAY 1 9:30 AM – 4:00 PM RIPLEY CENTER, SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION 9:30–10:45 Yoga as Lifestyle Medicine 11:15–12:15 Finding the Right “Yoga Rx” Therapeutic Yoga is the awakening giant in modern medicine for prevention, recovery and self-care. Loren Fishman will share his research on , osteoporosis, and , , weight control, PMS, and common injuries. will promote relief and healing through . Sat Bir Khalsa will review the psychophysiology of yoga and the research evidence base on the efficacy of yoga therapy and share practices from his clinical trials on insomnia and anxiety disor- ders; commentary on research on Alzheimer’s Disease will be included. Our speakers: Loren Fishman, MD, Physiatrist, director of Manhattan Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. Prolific au- thor, researcher and world-recognized pioneer in yoga therapy for musculoskeletal and neurological back pain, as well as myriad conditions including arthritis, osteoporosis, weight control, PMS and . Judith Hanson Lasater, PhD in East-West Psychology, Physical Therapist. Widely acclaimed international teacher, one of the founders of magazine. Her book, Relax and Renew: Restful Yoga for Stressful Times, is the classic text for restorative yoga. Sat Bir Khalsa, PhD Assistant Professor of Medicine, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He is a research scientist conducting biomedical research on yoga for insomnia, anxiety disorders and public schools and promoting yoga research as chief editor of the International Journal of Yoga Therapy and the medical textbook, The Principles and Practice of Yoga in Health Care.

12:15-1:15 Lunch and Roundtable Discussions Optional roundtable discussions are led by specialists in areas of medical and mental health, rehabilitation, addiction recovery, and and stress reduction; an option to purchase lunch is provided at time of registration. 1:30-3:00 Panel Discussion—Therapeutic Yoga for Healthy Living Our panelists represent the creative forces within therapeutic yoga: educators all, entrepreneurs, com- munity builders, policy makers, master teachers. The conversation, Q & A, will highlight the history of this “movement” and communicate the best practices of working 1:1 within a therapeutic setting. We’ll focus on physical and mental health, contemporary research and describe how a yoga therapist designs individual practices. You will find yourself pointed on the path toward finding the best therapeutic yoga instructor for yourself. The presenters will engage with the audience to illuminate and encourage further exploration and personal discovery in the realms of yoga practices.
