“It is mostly with personalities, but fashion is more and more part of it. We all make a decision in the morning about what to wear, even if it is just a hat or a black T-shirt. Fashion is not always spelled out in capital letters.”

This book captures the ‘soul’ of the pachyderm and man’s timeless fascination with the elephant. The joy and excitement this friendly giant always arouses when it makes an appearance are brought to life in a remarkable and memorable way in these images. Elephants parade through the streets and perform tricks in circuses or shows. In times of war they were often used to help their human companions to perform hard labour. There is also space

A splendid antidote to uncertain times: 4 5 Iconic photos are interspersed with unknown, original archive material. This is not a series of images of elephants contemporary photographs of nature, but rather a collection of exceptional images of elephants from around the world, taken in days gone by, often by anonymous photographers.

In an introductory essay, the well-known British author James Attlee describes his personal experiences with elephants and outlines the broader context of the relationship between man and pachyderm through the ages. In exploring that relationship, he does not shy away from highlighting the poor living conditions under which elephants in captivity are often kept.

Ambiguity and contradiction are the twin hallmarks of the paintings, drawings and films of Michaël Borremans (b. 1963). He deploys his technical virtuosity to create apparently familiar scenes, which on closer inspection have an unsettling effect. He combines black humour, violence, absurdism and beauty to produce images that are and alienating, in which the subject seems to be situated in an undefined time and space.

This catalogue provides an overview of Michaël Borremans’ work since 2013. The majority of the works have never been published before. The book focuses on the different series THE BADGER’S SONG of paintings he has exhibited over recent MICHAËL years: ‘Black Mould’, ‘Fire From the Sun’ and BORREMANS ‘Coloured Cones’.
