When speaking about the mechanisms of immune responses one should mention the innate and the acquired immunity. The main differences between them concern the duration of the reactions and the type of the immune cells involved in them. A characteristic feature of the innate response is its short reaction time and the participation of leukocytes and dendritic cells. Macrophages, formed from mono cytes, together with dendritic cells belong to the group of antigen-presenting cells. Innate immunity is the first stage response to many pathogens and it also plays an important role in the development of autoimmune diseases, such as demyelinating syndromes, connective tissue diseases, and atherosclerosis.1 In contrast, lymphocytes play a key role in the acquired response and two types of Correspondence: Barbara Lisowska functional immune responses can be identified:humoral immune response, sometimes Tel +48-22-755-9201 called antibody-mediated immune response, where the antibodies are secreted by Fax +48-22-755-9109 Email [email protected] B lymphocytes, and cell-mediated immune responses involving T lymphocytes submit your manuscript | www.dovepress.com Journal of Inflammation Research 2020:13 859–869 859 DovePress © 2020 Lisowska et al. Literature Review: Opioids and Death compiled by Bill Stockdale ([email protected]) This review is the result of searches for the terms opioid/opioid-related-disorders and death/ADE done in the PubMed database. This bibliography includes selected articles from the 1,075 found by searching during May, 2008, which represent key findings in the study of opioids. Articles for which there is no abstract are excluded. Also case reports and initial clinical trial reports are excluded. This is a compendium of all articles and do not lead to a specific target. There are three major topics developed in the literature as shown in this table of contents; • Topic One: Opioids in Causal Path to Death (page 1) o Prescription Drug Deaths (page 1) o Illicit Drug Deaths (page 30) o Neonatal Deaths (page 49) • Topic Two: Deaths in Palliative Care and Pain Treatment (page 57) • Topic Three: Pharmacology, Psychology, Origins of Abuse Relating to Death (page 72) • Bibliography (page 77) The three topics are presented below; each is followed in chronological order. Topic One: Opioids in Causal Path to Death Prescription Drug Deaths Karlson et al. describe differences in treatment of acute myocardial infarction, including different opioid use among men and women. The question whether women and men with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) are treated differently is currently debated. In this analysis we compared pharmacological treatments and revascularization procedures during hospitalization and during 1 year of follow-up in 300 women and 621 men who suffered an AMI in 1986 or 1987 at our hospital. During hospitalization, the mean dose of morphine (+/- SD) during the first 3 days was higher in men compared to women (14.5 +/- 15.7 vs.

  • The Opioid Systems and the Role of Glial Cells in the Effects of Opioids
Review paper Joanna Mika Department of Pain Pharmacology, Institute of Pharmacology, Polish Academy of Sciences, Krakow, Poland The opioid systems and the role of glial cells in the effects of opioids Abstract Understanding of the molecular mechanisms in the opioid systems in chronic pain should produce new, more effective methods of the pharmacotherapy of pain. Pharmacological suppression of glial activation in combi- nation with morphine, methadone, fentanyl and buprenorphine may be an important aspect of pain therapy. Long-term use of the classical opioid analgesics in patients with chronic pain processes results in tolerance, and the search of new treatment strategies based on the recognised mechanisms of pain is an important clinical and scientific issue. Proopiomelanocortin is the pre- selective effect on the receptor through which mor- cursor of the opioid peptides a-, b- and g-endorphin phine exerts its actions they have been called endo- and of the non-opioid peptides ACTH, a- and b- morphins [9]. While nothing is known about their MSH, CLIP and b-LPH. Of these peptides, the best precursors and genes, their location in the brain- investigated one is b-endorphin, which plays an im- stem, spinal cord and nerve ganglia as well as their portant role in stress, transmission of nociceptive coexistence with the MOP opioid receptor suggest stimuli, hormonal regulation and in the regulation an important role in nociception [10].
