Frank Schnitzer f.7-J ID NO: 03-0051 SUBJECT: Site Visit ,....---- ......-..... ------===J ·=-- ---=···---·.....····· -=·- === ........==---- The purpose of this visit was to review any channel changes since the prior inspection. The river was high due to the recent storm. It was foggy during the inspection. Even though it was difficult to view things through the fog, some changes were apparent. The location of the channel through the River Island site has adjusted on the upstream end. The velocity reduction of the channel as it enters the mine area has allowed the bedload to drop out and form large bars at the mouth of the channel capture. This has resulted in moving the channel alignment south through the bonded area. The channel is apparently trying to re-create the length that it lost during the February1996 storm in an attempt to regain the equilibrium slope through this reach. The shop building has been dismantled by the operator, and the embankment upon which it previously sat is eroding into the river. The main force of the current is at the toe of the 1 S-20 foot tall cutbank. I need to locate current photographs, review the new channel location and keep other agencies informed of the current conditions.
