  • Central Station Tom Bass Sculpture
By email to [email protected] Submission by: John Freeman The Astor 123 Macquarie St SYDNEY NSW 2000 I welcome the project but I have concerns about some aspects of the design. CENTRAL STATION The stop at Central will mean many more passengers using the station. Even without the project, the general increase in rail travel that TfNSW expect will lead to severe congestion at Central in peak hours. For people like me in their 70s, peak hours at Central are already something to avoid if you can. The metro design seems not to adequately increase either the capacity of the station or the improvement of passenger access and amenities. The design for Martin Place station will transform the existing station and improve station access. Is it not possible to do likewise at Central? A temporary pedestrian bridge may be necessary, but is it not possible to provide a permanent structure with lifts instead? TOM BASS SCULPTURE: 55 HUNTER ST (“P&0 FOUNTAIN”) TfNSW should accept responsibility for finding a suitable new location for the Tom Bass sculpture at 55 Hunter Street, also known as the P&O Fountain. The wall fountain was completed in 1963. In February 1964 Richard Neville and two other editors published the following cover on Issue No 6 of Oz: The wording underneath the picture read: On the corner of Hunter and Castlereagh Streets, Sydney, the P. & O. Shipping Line has completed its contribution to the Australian Uglinessthe P & O Building, officially opened by the Prime Minister in January. To alleviate the severe drabness of its sandstone façade, sculptor Tom Bass has set an attractive bronze urinal in the wall for the convenience of passers-by.

For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] The elY low House revisited Abstract Martin Sharp's Yellow House represents a transitional phase in the countercultural movement within Australia, from the peace and love Utopian ideals of the Sixties through to the disenchantment and technological changes of the Seventies. Inspired by Vincent Van Gogh's similarly titled building and aborted artist community in the south of France during the 1880s, and the British Arts Lab movement of the late 1960s, a 3-storey Victorian era terrace building in Sydney was transformed into a work of art, living museum, experimental art gallery and performance space, under the liberating and libertine guidance of Martin Sharp - an artist who had experienced some of the extraordinary cultural changes taking place in London and Europe between 1966-69. The eY llow House was a unique expression of the counterculture's disparate elements through a redundant example of the built environment, namely a former art gallery and guest house facing the threat of demolition. Art and architecture fused with lifestyle and culture within a veritable rabbit warren of rooms and performance spaces. Though innately ephemeral, the venture succeeded, during its relatively short period of existence between May 1970 and March 1973, in providing an expressive outlet for a disparate group of counterculture artists, performers and commentators.

Established in Sydney on April Fool’s Day in 1963 as a satirical magazine, its founders would become known, or rather infamous, for being charged on two occasions for obscenity violations. In 1967 a London version was created, where it garnered a new status as being the publication for enlightened hippies. The exported version of the magazine was formed around the premise of Neville’s 1970 counter-cultural treatise, Play Power, which proselytizes a world order based upon the “politics of play.” This new way of life, or lifestyle, expounded a return to play that transforms the nature of work, sex, and recreation. This alternative, ludic ideology was supported by the magazine’s original cartoonish yet sexually explicit imagery which would not only establish the magazine as a major player in the growing international Underground Press movement; it would create a novel, powerful method to counter and critique the existing hegemonic culture by promoting an exciting and fun alternative vision.

  • Thomas Dwyer Bass
Mr Thomas Dwyer Bass The honorary degree of Doctor of Visual Arts was conferred upon Thomas Dwyer Bass by Pro-Chancellor John McCarthy QC at the Sydney College of the Arts graduation ceremony held at 11.30am on 6 April 2009. The Pro-Chancellor (left) conferring the honorary degree upon Mr Bass, photo, copyright Memento Photography. Citation Pro Chancellor, I have the honour to present Thomas Dwyer Bass for admission to the degree of Doctor of Visual Arts (honoris causa). Tom Bass graduated from the National Art School in 1948 where he had studied sculpture under Lyndon Dadswell in the Post WWII reconstruction scheme. At this time he evolved his philosophy as a sculptor in the second half of the 20th Century. He was challenged by the, then, unconventional role for the sculptor to be a social communicator, a maker of totemic forms and emblems; works that expressed ideas of particular significance to communities or to society at large. Well before the notion of ‘social capital’ was developed, Tom Bass’ life and work was based on the belief that the values and ideals of communities bind them, and sustain the individuals within those communities to interact in a positive and supportive way. Tom Bass engaged with Schools, Universities and Government, Corporate and Religious institutions and over a twenty-five year period this remained virtually the single focus of his work. In executing his work he had to develop technical processes such as copper deposit casting, necessary in an era when bronze casting was not available to the scale Bass required for his major works.

The impact of the counterculture on Australian cinema in the mid to late 20th century A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of Master of Art Administration (Hons) within the School of Art History and Art Education, College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. Fiona Hooton 1 PLEASE TYPE THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES Thesis/Dissertation Sheet Surname or Family name: Hooton First name: Fiona Other name/s: Abbreviation for degree as given in the University calendar: School: School of Art History and Art Education Faculty:COFA Title: The impact of the counterculture on Australian cinema in the mid to late 20th century 2 Abstract 350 words maximum: (PLEASE TYPE) This thesis discusses the impact of the counterculture on Australian cinema in the late 20thcentury through the work of the Sydney Underground Film group, Ubu. This group, active between 1965 -1970, was a significant part of an underground counter culture, to which many young Australians subscribed. As a group, Ubu was more than a rat bag assemblage of University students. It was an antipodean aspect of an ongoing artistic and political movement that began with the European avant-garde at the beginning of the 20th century and that radically transformed artistic conventions in theatre, painting, literature, photography and film. Three purposes underpin this thesis: firstly to track the art historical links between a European avant-garde heritage and Ubu. Experimental film is a genre that is informed by cross art form interrelations between theatre, painting, literature, photography and film and the major modernist aesthetic philosophies of the last century.
