Hi, my name is Jessie, I grew up in a small country town in NSW by the name of Hay. I wanted to broaden my horizons so when the opportunity presented itself to join the Sanctuary Point team, I went for it and here I am today. I am excited for the future and looking forward to what the sea change will bring.

I have been a part of the Bendigo Bank group since 2017 as a Customer Service Officer. I have enjoyed this role and with my skills and knowledge I endeavour to be a benefit to the branch.

I am also a qualified personal trainer and enjoy helping people reach their health goals.

I am looking forward to getting involved in the community. Pop into the branch and say hi.

So what are YOU doing this coming Australia Day? Nothing in particular? Why not join Marine Rescue Jervis Bay at 9am on the 26th January 2020 at beautiful Moona Moona Creek, Huskisson for a day of family fun and entertainment with lots of laughs guaranteed. Our Duck Derby Day is our main fundraising event each year and all monies raised help keep our two rescue vessels fuelled, maintained and in a constant state of readiness to assist the boating public when necessary. We usually conduct around half a dozen duck races on the day and each race carries $500 cash prize money for first duck past the winning post. It only costs $5 to buy your duck in a race and each race is lots of fun with kids of all ages cheering their duck on. In addition, we also run a Corporate Duck Race. Tickets are $100 but there are only 100 ducks maximum in this race so the odds are quite good to take home the $1000 prize money. As well as the duck races, there are food stalls and market stalls so bring a picnic rug and maybe a sun shelter as well as all your family and enjoy a great day out. See you there! For further information or any enquiries please contact Unit Commander Tony Dagger on 0428 748 865 or our base on 4441 5433. They can be found in nature or they can be man-made. What they do add to photography, is depth, colour and shape and a new way of looking at an everyday object. We do take these elements for granted in our everyday lives, but when used specifically in photography, they can be very effective and eye-catching. They can be a repetition of a particular element or alternately, an intended broken repetition. They can also be chaotic or organised, but what they do bring to photography is a pause in page turning when actually looking at a series of photographs while your eyes are in ‘that mode'. It’s like going out to photograph something specific e.g. wildlife - your brain knows what you’re looking for and your eyes are in ‘search mode’ for that specific - in other words, you are focussed and not distracted in your pursuit. So, next time you’re out photographing, perhaps keep an eye out for some eye catching patterns - you may surprise yourself as to how effective the result can be. Sanctuary Point & Districts Community Bank Branch Scholarship program to benefit Bay & Basin youth Two Bay & Basin students will again benefit from a scholarship program, which will supplement their study costs in their first year of higher education. Sanctuary Point & Districts Community Bank Branch Chairperson Veronica Husted said "the Sanctuary Point Community Bank Branch Scholarship Program, which opened in December, was launched because the Branch believed local students deserved every opportunity to achieve their dreams. An investment in education yields great long-term dividends and by helping young people gain access to tertiary education, the returns to the student, their families and the local community are significant." Applications will also be considered from students wishing to undertake study at TAFE. “The Community Bank Branch Scholarship Program is a transformative undertaking that changes the lives of local students, strengthens communities for the long term and is a tangible example of the good that banking with us can achieve. Our young people are our future and we believe they deserve the best support possible to help forge their careers and achieve their dreams." Successful Sanctuary Point & Districts Community Bank Scholarship applicants will initially receive funding for one year and depending on academic performance, the scholarship may be renewed to assist in the second year of their study. Applications are invited from eligible students, starting their studies in 2020, from 2 December 2019. Applications close on 28 January 2020 and will be assessed in early February 2020. Last year, the Sanctuary Point & Districts Community Bank Branch Scholarship supported local students Emma McDonald & Rachael Harris with their Dentistry & Sports Science studies at Charles Sturt & Sunshine Coast Universities. Sanctuary Point & Districts Community Bank Branch also supported Summer Sky Dann with an ex gratia payment to assist her with her Arts Degree in Indigenous studies at University of NSW. The Sanctuary Point & Districts Community Bank Scholarship is part of the Bendigo and Adelaide Bank Scholarship Program, which partners with Community Bank branches, Rural Bank and The University of Melbourne. The program has now supported over 800 students, with $8.1 million in funding since its inception in 2007. 18 What’s your Big Idea?

2019 During November Bendigo Community Bank organised a Community Forum to discuss the needs of the Bay and Basin area. A group of around 60 people were there representing all sorts of groups and organisations locally. The night was a great success with some fantastic ideas spoken about and recorded. After the Forum there will be a small working group created to progress these ideas and put some actions behind these “big ideas”. The group will work closely with council and other interested parties.

32 Positions Vacant at Sanctuary Point Mens Shed. Several positions have become vacant at Sanctuary Point Mens Shed (someone left the side door unlocked again) and nominations will be considered at the upcoming AGM. These include the position of President: 1. Tertiary qualifications and previous experience are not necessary (or likely), although some level of literacy could be helpful, maybe. 2. Duties will include, but not restricted to, the following: (a) managing internal affairs (NB: helmet and cricketers’ box will be provided); (b) standing at the front when trouble occurs; (c) accepting blame (whatever, whenever, wherever). 3. The Committee has decided that, in order to attract the best candidates, the previous salary is to be doubled. (Yes, we know it is still zero, but it’s the thought that counts, right?) Nominations will also be accepted for the positions of Secretary, Treasurer and Executive Broom Attendant. To apply for any of these positions, you must be a paid-up member of the Sanctuary Point Mens Shed (and obviously, desperate for attention).

November weigh-in November saw our second last fishing competition for 2019. Time goes so quickly. This month was also the first of our yearly competition for Club Champion and it was in the estuary category. Some very nice catches were recorded with Peter being declared the winner and was also awarded the weigh master’s prize. The mystery fish was a Luderick, but as none were tabled, our mystery fish prize will jackpot for our December weigh in. Also worth a mention was Heath who fished boats, rocks and estuary. Angela also fished boats with a good catch the result. 34 L ocal History Patients (RAAF airmen) at Jervis Bay No 2 The RAAF at Jervis Rehabiliatation Unit Bay during WWII Though Jervis Bay has always been associated with the Royal Australian Navy, during World War II, what is now HMAS Creswell was used by all three services and the British Royal Navy. It was also a residential village and a tourist resort. The Royal Australian Naval College (RANC) built at Captains Point completed in 1916, was forced to close in 1930 because of economic pressures. The buildings were leased out to hotel and guesthouse owners and became a holiday resort. The tourist industry became the main source of livelihood for many local residents. The Navy continued, intermittently, to use Jervis Bay. During World War II ships sought refuge in Jervis Bay. The Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mary, ocean liners refitted as troop carriers, anchored in the Bay on the way to the Middle East. RAN Fairmiles carried out manoeuvres in and around Jervis Bay. Exercises were conducted for navigation and anti-submarine activities. The Army used the facilities at Captains Point to take stores, supplies and troops to the Battery set up on Bowen Island. In 1942, the RAAF established the No. 2 Military Rehabilitation Unit at Jervis Bay for convalescent airmen. Former classrooms and offices on the eastern side of the quarterdeck were used. Wing Commander, Dr G. Burniston was commanding officer, and for three and a half years from 1942 about 26 women from the RAAF Nursing Service and the WAAAFs, under the care of S/O Gill, provided medical, physio and occupational therapy for injured airmen and ex Prisoners of War. The WAAAFs were also employed in a variety of positions: medical clerks, pay clerks, equipment personnel, nurses, canteen operators and kitchen staff. During the RAAF occupation, some buildings were added, including a hydrotherapy unit at the rear of the gymnasium. The RAAF also occupied the Commanding Officer’s residence and its annex, several married quarters and the former Cooks and Steward’s block. To assist patients on crutches, a walkway was constructed between the annex and the CO’s residence with runners at the edge to prevent crutches slipping off. Airmen also used the gymnasium and the Quarterdeck for sport and exercise. The residents of the village supported the war effort and the still intact tourist resort. Elaine Barclay (nee Jarman) was one of the many permanent residents of the village. She was a volunteer plane spotter and she worked in the guesthouses, in Hardiman’s General Store and as an usherette at the Cinema. In 1943 she was employed on the switchboard in the telephone exchange, situated in the administrative block. The British came to Jervis Bay late in the war. The airstrip on the Bherwerre Ridge was commissioned as HMS Nabswick. Accommodation at the airstrip for men and aircraft was unsatisfactory, so squadron officers used rooms in the hotels and guesthouses of the tourist village. Foley’s Hotel was requisitioned for senior officers, while half of Links House accommodated junior officers, and the other half remained ‘civilian’, occupied by a weekly influx of visitors from Sydney. The RAAF Rehab Unit remained for a short time after the war to care for ex POWs.
