7 Richard Green, whom I met at a Scottish Rock Garden Club meeting, is giving DBHS his talk on his Central Patagonian Safari trip he took to South America. This will be on Friday 1st March 2019. Let’s hope the weather will be alright because last year, at this time, it was abysmal. The DBHS Annual Cheese and Wine took place on Friday 1st February 2019 and was a good evening. Good food, good drink and good chat, along with a few good stories and a quiz, all came together to make for an enjoyable evening enjoyed by around sixty guests. The quiz was all about Dingbats. It was great fun making them up and I think people quite enjoyed doing them, once they got the hang of it. Dalgety Bay Horticultural Society (DBHS) holds its meetings on the first Friday of each month at 7:30pm in Dalgety Bay Community Centre. You are welcome to come along to our meetings and, who knows, you may be convinced to join us. We offer discounts on seeds which we buy in bulk. We hold our Annual Plant Sale in May and our Annual Show is in September. We also have around 50 allotments in Dalgety Bay. If you think you may be interested in joining, please phone, Michael Gourlay on 01383 823425. He will give you all the information you require. Michael Gourlay Chairman

Gardening Jobs – March Is spring is on its way? Make sure you are prepared and have pruned all you need to. This is the beginning of the mad spring rush but, the weather can still turn nasty and ground frosts still abound, so keep an eye on the forecasts and plan accordingly. In our climate, best to wait for the soil to warm up to at least 12 degrees Celsius before sowing or planting, and this may be toward the end of the month. The Vegetable Patch in March Start sowing - Sow beetroot, broad beans, peas, leeks, radish, lettuce, parsnip, onions, carrots, turnips and herbs. Some of these can be planted directly outside. Otherwise start them off in pots and trays undercover. Plant early potatoes - in mid-March as long as the ground is not too waterlogged. They can be planted whether or not they have been chitted beforehand. Sow greenhouse crops – If you haven’t started yet, then sow tomatoes, cucumbers, capsicum, aubergine and melons. If the weather is warm then start them off in the greenhouse, otherwise put them in a heated propagator or start off inside. Plant Jerusalem artichoke tubers. They are an excellent winter veg. Plant asparagus crowns - This is the last chance before spring. Plant them now for a long-term crop. Dig over and rake your vegetable patch - Turn the soil over to remove any old crops and weeds. Rake the soil so that it is ready for planting. Remove any weeds - Keep an eye out for weeds. They will start growing as soon as temperatures start rising. Hoe the young weeds as soon as they appear. The Fruit Garden in March Plant strawberry plants - Buying plants rather than runners will give you a better chance of strawberries this year. Stop forcing rhubarb - Towards the end of the month, remove forcing pots from rhubarb. Don’t leave the pots on too long or you’ll exhaust the plants. Buy blueberry bushes - Blueberries are very easy to grow and are a delicious snacking fruit. Grow varieties which ripen at different times to give you berries throughout the summer. Mulch around fruit trees and bushes - Spread compost or manure around the base of fruit trees and bushes. This helps suppress weeds as well as retaining moisture. Other Gardening Jobs in March Don’t stop feeding the birds - I know it’s tempting to stop feeding the birds once you feel spring is on its way, but this is the time when food stocks for birds are very low and they will really appreciate a bit of help. Make sure they have plenty of fresh water too. Enjoy the daffodils and crocuses - These are the first colour of the New Year and a welcome sight after winter. Make grand plans for your garden - Spring-time recharges your batteries, and many grand plans and schemes start to form. Choose a good one and put it into action.

Currently, a typical cocoa farmer in Cote d’Ivoire earns 74p a day. A living income is calculated as the net annual income needed for a household to afford a decent standard of living; that means you need to earn enough to eat nutritiously throughout the year, drink safe water and access healthcare. This would also allow you to send your children to school, live in a decent home, save for unexpected setbacks and allow the elderly to retire with dignity. The Fairtrade movement believes a living income is not a luxury but a human right. Ninety per cent of the world’s cocoa is grown on small family farms. Cocoa trees grow in tropical areas where it is hot and rainy with lush vegetation to provide shade for the trees. The primary growing regions are Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana produce over 60% of the world’s cocoa supply. Cocoa is a delicate and sensitive crop. Trees begin to yield pods by the fifth year and can be at peak production for another 10 years. For all their work, cocoa farmers gain very little. INVERKEITHING MEDICAL GROUP SURGERY NEWS 4th to 10th March World Salt Awareness Week

I love my salt. My husband tells me it will be the death of me! And I should know better. Too much salt in our diet is linked with high blood pressure, which puts us at increased risk of stroke and heart disease. We should be aiming for 6 g of salt a day, which is the equivalent of a teaspoon. The Department of Health estimates that for every 1g reduction in daily salt intake, 7,000 deaths could be prevented and 4,000 of those deaths would occur before the age of 70. So if I hope to continue to work until I am 70, due to the increased retirement age, I will need to make some changes. Visit www.worldactiononsalt.com for great ideas on how to reduce your salt intake, including cooking using more herbs and spices to give things flavour. 15 Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline Link Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline Fife Link has been based in Dalgety Bay for over 15 years. The volunteers have been bringing over groups of children from the areas that were the worst affected by the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster which happened in 1986. You may have seen them around Dalgety Bay as they wear red caps and were involved in planting the Hope Garden with Blooming Lovely. Each year, the children aged from between 9 and 12 years old come to Fife for a month long recuperative visit. A visit to Scotland can help boost their immune system for up to 2 years. As well as visiting the dentist and opticians, they are treated to the best of what Fife has to offer including our lovely beaches and parks and make use of our local Scout hall. However, these visits rely on the generosity of our local community. Last year we had hosts in Dalgety Bay, Aberdour, Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy. Photos from top down Hope Garden, Ale and Pate and Crafts with Care. All of which provided an activity for the children last year. CCLL Fife are needing more volunteers to host the children and their leader this summer. Could this be you? The children are hosted in pairs but you only need one spare room and relevant disclosure checks are made. Due to lack of hosts, the number of children we can bring over has been decreasing and the visit may be shortened to 3 weeks this year. We are a small but supportive group and happy to answer any questions. We are also appreciative of any donations made by local businesses. This can be in the form of sponsorship to help bring the children over, offering to take a collecting tin for us or donating clothes, shoes, toiletries etc but we also need volunteers to help provide activities for the children when they are here. If this is something you think you could help us with then please get in touch. https://www.facebook.com/CCLLFife/ or 07411369733 Thank you - The Niven Family

Our February meeting was held in Dalgety Bay Bowling Club. Sadly several of our members were absent due to illness, but those of us who did make it thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Our thanks to Margaret Lister and the ladies who provided a wonderful spread of home baking, and to the bowling club committee for allowing us the use of the premises. Your kindness is greatly appreciated. Entertainment was supplied by Bill O’Donnell, who told jokes and wee stories, as well as belting out some familiar tunes on the accordion. We were all singing and clapping along - we even had a couple of folk up dancing! Altogether a lovely afternoon. Although our group is presently at capacity, I am happy to take names for a waiting list. You may also be interested to know there is now a branch of Contact the Elderly in Kirkcaldy. 19 Wild about the Bay If you had a walk along the coastal path in Dalgety Bay in late January/early February, you may have been lucky enough to see the large flock of Greylag Geese that frequented the Bay and the bottom field of Barns Farm. Initially comprising around 200 birds, the flock swelled to a grand total of 334 in the freezing conditions on 2 February. This is an unprecedented total for Dalgety Bay, although a flock of about 180 has been present around Otterston Loch this winter, and these may be some of the same birds. One of the birds stood out, having a lot of white in its plumage, presumably because one of its parents or ancestors was a white “farmyard goose”. Greylags are the only breeding goose in the UK. The British population is a mixture of birds from the remaining wild population in the north and west of Scotland and the reintroduced population in other parts of the UK. It is no longer possible to tell the two apart, as their ranges now overlap due to recent population expansion. Every winter, the British Greylag population is augmented by birds that breed in Iceland but spend the winter over here. The ancestors of domestic geese, Greylags are easily identified by their large orange bills. If seen with other grey geese, such as Pink- footed Geese, their larger size is also obvious. The cold snap caused fresh waterbodies to freeze over completely, forcing the wildfowl that use them to head for the coast. As well as the geese, other species normally found on freshwater lochs could also be seen in the Bay, such as Coot and Tufted Duck. There were also much larger than usual numbers of Wigeon, Teal, Mallard and Goldeneye. Some of these species are visible in the photo, how many can you make out?

20 Sunday 10th February saw the fruition of our project to place more information and name boards in our Community woods. This project has been funded by the Tesco Bags of Help Scheme so we are very grateful to them and to the many of you who put your blue tokens in our box. We now have information boards in all three woods – Bathing House, Hopeward and Crow. These boards tell of the wildlife to be seen in and around each wood, the history, geology and trees to be Dalgety Bay seen. We have also produced information leaflets about the woods, the group Community Woodlands Group and our activities. These will be in a holder on the board at the Heritage Viewpoint.

It was very encouraging to have a good number of our volunteers join us for this event. We are very reliant on volunteers, so do come and join us in this very worthwhile and rewarding work. Very good exercise! Enjoy the woods. Contact us through our website www.dbcwg.org email [email protected] or through Facebook.
