    1 Cultural Daily Independent Voices, New Perspectives Relevant Soldier’s Play; Dated Bob and Carol David Sheward · Wednesday, February 5th, 2020 The twisted legacy of racism and shifting attitudes on sexuality are the diverse topics of two current New York stage offerings—a revival of A Soldier’s Play presented on Broadway by the Roundabout Theatre Company and a musical version of Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice produced by The New Group at the Pershing Square Signature Center Off-Broadway. Both present material from previous eras with stark perspectives on how relevant they may still be. While one is still shockingly immediate, the other seems quaint and laughable. What’s not too surprising is that race remains a hot- button issue while unabashed examinations of carnality have passed into the passe. Blair Underwood in A Soldier’s Play. Credit: Joan Marcus Charles Fuller’s A Soldier’s Play won the Pulitzer Prize in 1982 and searingly focuses on the corrosive effect of bigotry in the military and American society at large. After a hit Off-Broadway run presented by the Negro Ensemble Company, the suspense Cultural Daily - 1 / 5 - 03.08.2021 2 drama was adapted into a film called A Soldier’s Story, and then revived Off-Broadway in 2005. Fuller skillfully wraps his unflinching observations on racial animus and its poisonous influence into a taut murder mystery. In a 1944 training camp in the deep south, African-American officer Richard Davenport has been assigned to investigate the unsolved killing of career Army black sergeant Vernon Waters. At first, it appears white supremacists are the culprits since lynchings of African-American servicemen were not uncommon, but as Davenport delves deeper into the details of the case, he discovers a complex web of hate and resentment among the black soldiers fueled by institutional discrimination.

    ABSTRACT Title of Document: “OVER THE MOON”: THE CREATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF RENT BY JONATHAN LARSON Elizabeth Titrington, Master of Arts, 2007 Directed By: Professor Richard King Chair, Department of Musicology Despite its critical acclaim and commercial success , the hit musical Rent by Jonathan Larson has received scant attention in academic literature. The story of Rent has been told and retold in the popular media, but a look at Larson’s own drafts, notes, and other personal wri tings adds another important and largely missing voice – Larson’s own. In this study, I use the Jonathan Larson Collection, donated to the Library of Congress in 2004 , to examine this seminal work and composer by tracing Rent ’s development and documenting L arson’s creative process.     National Playwright Residency Program PROGRAM PARTICIPANT BIOS PLAYWRIGHTS Murielle Borst-Tarrant Murielle Borst-Tarrant (Kuna/Rappahannock Nations) is an author, playwright, director, producer, cultural artist, educator, and human rights activist. Murielle began working as an artist early in her life with Spiderwoman Theatre. After attending Long Island University, she began combining Native American myth and creation stories to help compose a subgenre of literature referred to as Indigenous Fantasy. She is the author of the book series The Star Medicine and short stories published by Miami University Press. She is the Artist Director of Safe Harbor Indigenous Collective. She has produced, wrote, and directed Don’t Feed the Indians- A Divine Comedy Pageant! which premiered at La MaMa in 2017. She works on the deconstructing the pedagogy of the arts within Native communities in the NYC education system. Nominated for the Rockefeller grant in 2001, she won a Native Heart Award. She served as the Special Assistant to the North American Regional representative to the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. Global Indigenous Woman’s Caucus Chair (North America) in 2013 to May of 2014. She has spoken at the Indigenous Women’s Symposium at Trent University, at the International Conference at the Muthesius Academy of Art in Kiel Germany, and the Norwegian Theater Academy. J. The musical, produced by Hello Entertainment/David Garfinkle, Martin McCallum, Marvel Entertainment and Sony Pictures Entertainment, is to open on Feb. 18. Industry insiders have said its budget would be the largest in Broadway history, about $40 million; a spokesman for the show, Adrian Bryan-Brown, said on Tuesday that the producers would not comment on the dollar amount. ‘Spider-Man’ Musical Names 2 Of Its Stars June 27, 2009 Evan Rachel Wood will be Mary Jane Watson and Alan Cumming will star as Norman Osborn (a k a Green Goblin) in the upcoming Broadway musical “Spider-Man, Turn Off The Dark,” the producers announced on Friday.
