Robert Haekenkamp John Noe Joann Wentling Kaiah Mae Heilman Nichole Iverson Bridgee O’Brien 5 NEWS SAINT OF THE DAY – BLESSED GAETANO CATANOSO Gaetano was born at Chorio di San Lorenzo in the Reggio region of on February 17, 1879, studied for the priesthood in the diocesan seminary, and was ordained in 1902. He served in a succession of parishes and diocesan roles. While doing that, he followed his passion for spreading devoon to the and to make reparaon for offenses done to Jesus under this tle. For that purpose, in 1919 he established the Pious Union of the Holy Face. This became a formal foundaon in 1934, called the Instute of Veronican Sisters of the Holy Face, whose work was to establish refuges and catechecal centers in the most remote rural areas of the region. Gaetano promoted devoon to the Holy Face and the work of the Sisters with great determinaon, through many difficules, to the end of his life. Two expressions of his work were the publicaon of a newsleer called “The Holy Face” and the construcon of a sanctuary in honor of the Holy Face next to the motherhouse of the Veronican Sisters. A big influence on Gaetano was Don and his “Lile Work of Divine Providence,” which was designed to bring help to the neediest whoever and wherever they were, including slum-dwellers, orphans, and earth-quake vicms. The “Lile Work” inspired the Veronican Sisters too and their mission to people in the most abandoned areas of the country and of society. Before his death, Gaetano proposed the establishment of a Congregaon of priests, to be known as “Cyreneans” a er Simon of Cyrene, who would simply be available for assignment to the most remote areas of a diocese at the direcon of their bishop. Gaetano fell asleep in the Lord at on April 4, 1963. Blessed Gaetano Catanoso, pray for us!
