Biographical Note

The Norman E. Himes Archive is a collection of correspondence and related materials; manuscripts of books, articles, and speeches; and miscellaneous papers presented to the Countway Library in 1967 by Dr. Himes' second wife and widow, Mrs. Robert C. Weinberg of New York and Ridgefield, Connecticut.

Norman Himes was a teacher-scholar in the field of sociology and economics, whose avid interest in social reforms and cultural developments led to study in the areas of population problems; history of contraception and the birth control movement; marriage and family relations. He was an immensely productive and creative man of great energy and the archive is rich in materials relating to his research, writing, and teaching activities. Dated items are from 1918 to 1956, but the bulk of the collection falls between 1925 and 1950--a neat 25-year period during which time attitudes toward the subjects of Dr. Himes' work changed in the most dramatic manner.

For a man of modest financial means who rarely had the luxury of secretarial services, Dr. Himes (with the help of his first wife, Vera) carried on an amazingly extensive correspondence with a variety of people and organizations, and a number of subjects, and of both professional and personal natures. The flow of correspondence is with leaders in the academic world (sociologists, economists, historians, professional groups), the birth control and eugenics world (medical practitioners, lay figures, clinics, national and local organizations), the book world (dealers, collectors, libraries, publishers, editors of journals), and in many other areas (including religion, government, law). It reflects public and private sentiment and much “inside gossip” about subjects which were somewhat tainted, to say the least, but gradually became accepted and even respectable.

During World War II, Dr. Himes left the scholarly world for government service which he continued in Germany during the postwar period, specializing in adult education and youth programs. He was on the verge of retirement and (hopefully) return to work on several of his unfinished research projects--chief among which were books on a Social and Economic History of Contraception and Preparation for Marriage--when he had his fatal heart attack in June of 1949.

Dr. Percy LeMon Clark, Jr.: The correspondence with Dr. Clark is particularly interesting. Harry Cutner: An artist with book collecting interests similar to Himes. The letters after 1946 are mostly of a personal nature. Earl J. Hamilton: Himes and Hamilton kept up a very active correspondence, particularly from 1926 through 1935, in which they exchanged news of research, publications, academic careers, etc. Stella Hanau: She became a personal friend and the letters here and in the Birth Control Review file contain much inside gossip about the birth control world. Frank H. Hankins: The letters in this file are mostly of a personal nature from 1945 through 1949. Marie E. Kopp: This file includes 1935 correspondence with E. B. Wilson about her birth control case history study. Emily Mudd: This correspondence contains a wealth of detail about NEH's work in the marriage and family field. Margaret Sanger: All of the important Sanger materials have been gathered together in this file, whether she wrote on the letterhead of the American Birth Control League, National Committee for Federal Legislation on Birth Control, Birth Control Clinical Research Bureau, or whichever of several Conferences that she headed. The file also includes correspondence with her secretaries, Anna Lifshiz and Florence Rose. Although the earliest materials in the file concern NEH's proposed study of the English birth control movement and include letters of introduction dated 1926, it is probable that Himes had met Mrs. Sanger in 1924 when she spoke before the Harvard Liberal Club. Joseph J. Spengler: Himes and Spengler kept up an active exchange of news about their various population research projects. In 1936-1937 they wrote about collaborating on a population problems textbook but nothing came of it. Dr. christopher Tietze: His first contact with Himes was as European editor of Marriage Hygiene. NEH encouraged him to immigrate to the United States and they became personal friends. Robert C. Weinberg: NEH's widow, Marian Bailey Himes, became Mrs. Robert C. Weinberg. Joseph and Hazel Zborowski: Joe Zborowski wrote frequently and at length to Himes about their mutual book collecting interests and about personal matters.

Marriage Hygiene was a quarterly journal published in Bombay, India, by Dr. A. P. Pillary, 1934-1937. NEH served as American editor as of the second issue and was a frequent contributor. The journal was in constant financial difficulty and was the subject of a legal battle, which eventually resulted in a victory for birth control. In 1947, the journal was revived and its name changed to International Journal of Sexology the following year. Other correspondence and related materials re Marriage Hygiene have been indicated in the descriptions under Alphabetical Files; e.g., Greenbaum, Wolff & Ernst, U. S. Oustoms Service, , Dr. Christopher Tietze, etc.
