Spanish players react to their penalty shootout win over Switzerland in a Euro 2020 quarterfinal clasht in Saint Petersburg Stadium this morning (NZ time). Spain won the shootout 3-0 after a gruelling match ended 1-all after extra time. Spain had missed their last five regulation penalties, two of them at this tournament, but scored them when it counted most — Mikel Oyarzaabal netting the winning spot kick. Spain took the lead in regulation time through a Denis Zakaria own goal — the 10th of the tournament — but the Swiss equalised when captain Xherdan Shaqiri scored from a defensive mix-up in the 68th minute. Switzerland had a mountain to climb when midfielder Remo Freuler was red-carded for a studs-up sliding tackle in the 78th minute but Spain failed to take advantage of their many chances. Spain face Italy in the semifinals. Italy (pictured inset celebrating) knocked out world No.1 Belgium 2-1, thanks to goals to Nicolo Barella (31st minute) and Lorenzo Insigne (44th).
