Afterwards, enjoy your afternoon tea and scones at English Tea House (pinkies up!) before being dropped off at our hotel. Sandakan was the former capital of British North Borneo until 1946. The town prospered in the early days due to its port with visiting traders from around the world. Sandakan is an important town to Australian and British WWII history with the infamous Death Marches commencing here in 1945 and ending in Ranau. After WWII the capital moved to Jesselton (now Kota Kinabalu). Overnight Fourpoints Sheraton (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner) Day Six Thursday 11th June GOMANTONG CAVES / SUKAU RAINFOREST LODGE After breakfast at our beautiful Sandakan Hotel, we’ll drive to Gomantong Caves and explore the biggest bird’s nest caves in Sabah. Last time, we were lucky enough to see a wild orangutan in a tree near the entrance to the cave. Magical! And we actually saw the birds’s nests being harvested. Now for the absolute highlight of the trip – our stay up the River! We’ll continue the journey to Sukau on the Kinabatangan River, check in to the Sukau Rainforest Lodge, and take an afternoon river cruise in search of wildlife and birds using a boat with hybrid system of outboard and electric motor (depending on river current). We have been SO lucky on previous trips to see pygmy elephants playing on the banks of the river – and crossing it! We’ve also seen Proboscis and Macaque monkeys, hornbills, snakes, and the elusive Orangutans! You’ll love our candlelight dinner overlooking the riverbank followed by slide presentation and interpretation by naturalist guide. Stay overnight at the Sukau Rainforest Lodge – Superior. (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner) Note: Every boat for the river cruises are equipped with outboard engines and electric motor. With its clean and quiet operation, the electric motor will be turned on to manoeuvre the boat only during wildlife viewing (if location and river current permits). This way, you’ll be able to truly enjoy the wildlife experience without disturbing the peace and quiet of the natural surroundings. Day Seven Friday 12th June OXBOW LAKE / SUKAU RAINFOREST LODGE Before brekky, we’ll take a 6.00 a.m. morning river cruise up the Kinabatangan River to Kelenanap oxbow lake to view more birds and wildlife. After breakfast, we’ll enjoy an educational tour along the lodge’s Hornbill Boardwalk with our in-house naturalist. After lunch, join our in-house Orang Utan Talk activity. In the afternoon, we proceed for another river cruise for more wildlife. Overnight at the Sukau Rainforest Lodge – Superior. (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner) Day Eight Saturday 13th June SUKAU/ BORNEO PRIMATES After breakfast, we’ll return early to Sandakan overland by bus. Afterwards, you’ll be delighted by our visit to Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre. We proceed to watch a video show about the plight of the Orang Utans and the rehabilitation efforts ongoing at the Centre. Walk ten minutes through the rainforest on wooden boardwalks to witness the feeding of the orang utans at 1000hrs, and then we continue to the newly completed enclosed nursery area for young orang utans. We’ve been lucky in the past to have some orangutans just walk along the boardwalk beside us! Unbelievably cute! We’ll also visit the Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre to learn about conservation of the world’s smallest bear. Note on Camera Use at Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre: For any camera with zoom lens from 100 to 400mm, video camera or other video recording equipment for personal use are chargeable at RM10.00 per unit.
