SENECA — After being a hands-on audiologist for 30 years and growing up with a mother who struggled with hearing loss, Barbara Greb said she has seen how hearing prob- lems can affect quality of life. “The thing about hearing loss is you don’t know what you don’t hear because you don’t hear it,” she said. “You really don’t know that you’re not hearing well until your family starts to complain, you’re constantly asking for repeats all the time and you start struggling with communication. By the time you get to me, you’re frustrated and your family is frustrated. My goal in life is to help people hear better and make their quality of life better.” Greb said she wants people to know how important it is to take care of hearing issues as soon as possible. “You can’t let it go on,” she said. “Hearing loss has been linked to early onset dementia and cognitive decline, it’s linked to sensory deprivation, which means your nerves degenerate and then you lose the ability to understand speech, and it’s linked to an increased risk of falling down. There’s medical reasons why people need to take care of hearing loss, not to men- tion the quality-of-life issue.” On top of that, hearing loss can also lead to depression and isolation. “We’re social beings and we need to communicate,” Greb said. “When you lose that abili- ty, you lose who you are, and it’s an ongoing decline.
