3 2. Background to the organization of this fair

(1) “Green Productivity (GP)” – Previous activities and developments

Increasing interest in the environment, and the necessity of efforts to combat the environmental problems that arose on a mass global scale at the beginning of the 1990s, resulted in the model for “sustainable development” proposed at the Rio Global Environment Summit held in 1992. Based on this, the APO embarked on the creation of an “environmental protection special enterprise” in 1994 with the use of contributions from the Japanese government, and put forward a new concept of “Green Productivity (GP),” which combined environmental protection and the improvement of productivity with the aim of achieving sustainable development within a social economy.

Since then, the following activities were carried out and ties with other environment related organizations were expanded. (1) 1996: The “Green Productivity World Conference” was held in the Philippines. Having adopted the “Manila Declaration,” the APO called upon its affiliate countries and their corporations to participate in the GP endeavor. (2) 1997: A mutual collaboration memorandum was signed together with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Paris Office and ever since, a co-hosted event has been held every year. (3) The APO began collaborative enterprises with the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) in the year 1999, with the United States Environmental Protection Agency in the year 2000, and with the Singaporean Regional Institute of Environmental Technology (RIET) in the year 2002. (4) In year 2002, the APO officially participated in the U.N.-sponsored “Sustainable Development World Summit” (Environmental Development Summit) held in Johannesburg in South Africa, and announced their “Green Productivity” accomplishments.

Then, in August of 2003, the APO inaugurated the “Green Productivity” Advisory Committee. This committee was established with the aim of further developing the GP enterprise with the cooperation of Japanese corporations, which possess the world’s highest level of environmental technology. By extensively disseminating the world’s most advanced environmental management technology, produced by Japanese corporations, through the APO network and the GP enterprise, as well as through associated and subsidiary companies of Japanese corporations located in other Asian countries, the APO expects to achieve sustainable development in the Asian and Pacific regions, which will also lead to the reinforcement of the international competitive power of Japanese and local companies. Approximately 40 leading Japanese firms responsible for environmental management are participating in the Advisory Committee.

4 2. Background to the organization of this fair

(2) Green Purchasing and its Promotion

One of the “Green Productivity” Advisory Committee’s targets is to change the links of the Asian supply chain into green companies. This consists of Asian governments and corporations promoting the use of environmentally friendly products and also reforming their business practices. As a result of consumers and producers both focusing on environmentally conscious products and services, consideration for the environment is expected to increase at various levels of manufacturing, distribution and consumption.

With the aim of enlightening the Japanese public about such environmentally conscious products and services, as well as pushing forward the development of such business in Japan, an “Eco-Products” exhibition has been held in December every year at Tokyo Big Site since 1999. The exhibition has marked increasing success every year and in 2003, achieved approximately 120,000 visitors in three days. The visitors comprised a wide array of people, ranging from environment-related organizations to housewives and students, including elementary school children, as well as business personnel directly involved with environmentally conscious products and services.

It is important to enlighten the consumers of Asian countries other than Japan about the significance of green purchasing and simultaneously provide such countries with opportunities for matchmaking and discovery of business partners within the eco-business field, and furthermore, strive to strengthen the globalization and international competitiveness of green purchasing in Asia Pacific region. The “Eco-Products International Exhibition” is expected to fulfill such hopes.

5 3. Event evaluation

Event Evaluation

The Eco-Products International Exhibition 2004 was held as the first environmentally conscious products and services sample fair in Southeast Asia. 76 corporations and organizations participated from six different countries, centered around Japan and Malaysia, and the exhibition achieved approximately 12,000 visitors in three days.

Other than exhibits, diverse programs, such as ceremonies, seminars and quiz rallies, were deployed at the venue, targeted toward business visitors and the general public.

The exhibits were displayed in the exhibition hall under the following eight categories. (1) Cars (2) Energy (3) Eco Materials (4) Recycling Industry (5) Home and Office (6) Food and Health (7) Education, Research & Consultancy (8) Others

The contents of the exhibition conveyed the potential of environmentally conscious products and services over a wide range of fields, commencing with fuel-cell vehicles, which marked their debut into Malaysia, to more familiar products, such as materials, home electric appliances, and foods. Simultaneously, the event provided a variety of interesting topics, which offered information and promoted understanding about various environmental issues.

Malaysia’s Minister of International Trade and Industry, Dato' Seri Rafidah Aziz, carried out a keynote lecture at the opening ceremony and remained to tour the exhibition. In addition, Minister Rafidah left a comment on the message board at the entrance of the exhibition hall.
