focused on building things up as opposed A to tearing them down. Numerous expressions of tribute have been offered for the Sacramento River Cats owner who died too soon at 58 last November. In truth, it’s easy to exaggerate a human legacy. But Savage is different, because his contributions won’t be measured by words, but by concrete deeds accomplished against the fury of Sacramento-style politics. Everyone loves Raley Field now. It’s quickly become a Sacramento landmark, a place where top athletes play championship baseball and families celebrate life. Savage was bringing professional baseball back to the region after a long absence, but he had to bulldoze through hurdles to do so. He had to beat a lawsuit, construct the stadium, complete its financing, move the team from Vancouver and rebuild it here – all in a matter of months. “All anyone thinks of is the good stuff now,” said Tina Thomas, the lead attorney working with Savage back then. “It was risky and gutsy, but he pulled it off.” By any measure, the River Cats are the best minor league baseball franchise in America. Savage didn’t get it done by being a pushover. “He was a fearsome negotiator,” said Mark Friedman, a developer and friend. When I think of Savage, I think of Little Leaguers in multicolored uniforms filling the lawn seats on a hot summer’s day. Or the glorious sight of a late summer sunset against the Tower Bridge. Or a Delta breeze soothing the grandstands under a moonlit sky. Just days before Savage’s death, West Sacramento approved a massive construction project that someday will fill the vacant lots around Raley Field with homes and businesses. An amphitheater will go up, complementing baseball with music. “Art completed his ballpark before we bought the property to build in West Sacramento,” Friedman said. “I don’t think we would have bought the property otherwise. (He) showed the way forward.” Though he’s no longer with us, summer and children will return each year to the park that Savage built – a legacy beyond words. He felt close, but not quite there, and settled for a jam- shot single here, a move-the-runner fly ball there. On Tuesday night, he joined what looks like a Rockies breakout. Blackmon whacked a first-inning home run -- his first in 42 at-bats -- to straightaway center field and added two more hits in his team's fifth victory in six games, an 8-1 win over the Giants at Coors Field. "It's really good to continue to try and win games, play team baseball, even if you're not feeling real awesome at the plate or on the mound," said Blackmon, who has 15 homers -- nine of which occurred during a hot April -- and a .275 batting average. The victory -- which also included Antonio Senzatela's seven scoreless, three-hit innings in his first start of the season and Nolan Arenado's National League-leading 22nd homer -- put the Rockies back at .500 (43-43). Could it also have signaled Blackmon's return to major contributor status? To take his spot on the roster, the A’s recalled infielder Andy Parrino from Triple-A Sacramento. Sizemore was 1 for 6 with a double in two games with the A’s before the injury. This is his second career stint on the disabled list as he missed the entire 2012 season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during spring training. Parrino was batting .174 with a double and RBI in six games with Sacramento, all at shortstop. He batted .368 with one home run and nine RBI in 26 games with the A’s this spring before he was optioned to Sacramento March 30. The 27-year-old switch-hitter appeared in nine games in left field, eight at third base, eight at shortstop, two at second base and one in right field during Spring Training. Parrino was acquired by the A’s with Andrew Werner from San Diego Nov. 16, 2012 in exchange for Tyson Ross and A.J. Kirby-Jones. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 1, 2018 JOSE OSUNA HONORED AS APRIL INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE MONTH The International League announced today that Indianapolis third baseman Jose Osuna has been named the League's Player of the Month for April. Along with winners from other leagues, Osuna will be presented with an award from Minor League Baseball in recognition of his performance last month. Through the first month of the 2018 campaign, Indianapolis third baseman Jose Osuna is hitting .361 and leading the International League in extra-base hits (12) and slugging (.656). He’s also tied for 2nd in the circuit in RBI (16), doubles (9), and total bases (40). Indy’s cleanup hitter has clubbed three home runs, which does not include the three-run blast he hit for Pittsburgh upon being promoted for a doubleheader on April 25. Osuna has been extremely reliable during his time with the Indians, hitting safely in all but one of his seventeen games played so far this season. He capped his stellar month with a three-hit, three-RBI, three-run contest at Toledo to help lead the Tribe roll past the division-leading Mud Hens, 10-7. All three of his long balls this season have been hit on the road, where he is batting .414 in eight games. Osuna becomes the first member of the Indians to be honored as IL Player of the Month since second baseman Alen Hanson in May of 2015. 25-year-old Jose Osuna is in his ninth season as a professional player. He was signed by Pittsburgh as a non-drafted free agent prior to the 2010 campaign.
