The Mako Shark is the mascot for the Marymount College program.

It was chosen due to Marymount Colleges association with the water, as well as the Mako being the fastest shark in the water (and one of the top five man-eaters).

MARYMOUNT MAKOS NETBALL

Marymount College has a proud history as a competitive Netball school. The Netball program begins in Year 7 and continues through to Year 12, where the girls play against Gold Coast Independent Colleges on a Thursday afternoon in Term 2.

Marymount Junior, Intermediate and Senior teams participate in the Catholic Cup in Brisbane in Term 2. The Junior B team came runners up in 2018 and the senior team came third in the top division. The girls in Years 7 to 9 also participate in the Vicki Wilson Shield in Term 3 and those in Years 10 to 12 play in the Vicki Wilson Cup. Both teams performed extremely well in 2018.

In 2018 the Senior netball team played in the Hinterland Monday night competition. The girls were in the top division against very experienced netballers. They made it into the semi-final and lost by the smallest of margins. This competition is great preparation for the girls who will want to trial for the QISSIN ( Independent Secondary Schools Netball) Competition played every year in the first week of the mid-year holidays. In 2019 a senior team will play in an elite indoor competition at Carrara Stadium and a Development team will play on Monday nights at Benowa.

In 2018 at the QISSN carnival, the Marymount team made it into the top 8 teams out of 64 teams. After playoffs, they placed 7th – the best result in a number of years. Marymount has an excellent history of placing well at QISSN and since the carnival started in 2000 they have won the QISSN Cup three times, and the Lara Nilsson Trophy three times. We look forward to continually improving our performance in the years to come. The Marymount Mako’s Netball teams have developed an excellent spirit and are dedicated to performing to the best of their ability. They pride themselves on their discipline both on and off the court.

Facilities

An onsite gymnasium, including a core and cardio room, is used weekly by the Senior Netball team as part of a fitness program. An indoor netball court is also used weekly for training sessions and match play. Both of these, along with coaching, helps improve the girls’ netball ability.

1 Goals

Education is the primary focus. Girls must perform well in class to remain in the netball program. We aim to improve the following qualities in each of our girls:

 Discipline on and off the playing field  Character development of all program members in line with the College Mission Statement  Respect for all officials, opposition players, spectators and team mates  Resilience when decisions do not go the player’s way, in all facets of life  Determination for all boys to do their best at all times  A team mentality where the efforts of all members are valued  Commitment to, and sacrifice for, the Marymount Netball Program
