Libraries are not just places to borrow books. They’re community hubs where people can meet, have fun, discover new ideas and foster a love for lifelong learning.

LETTER OF THE MONTH

GARDEN CITY I have low vision and my friend is vision impaired. On a recent trip to the city we discovered that the signage on the light poles in and around Swanston Street are in braille. I would like to congratulate the City of Melbourne on doing this because it’s very helpful and well overdue. It’s a great initiative and I encourage the City Of Melbourne to continue with the braille signs and letting people know to encourage other city councils to do the same. It is very helpful and very clear, and really well designed. Mr Simon Chong, Heidelberg. We feature letters from our readers, so please share with us at [email protected]

ARTS ARTS HOUSE: STRATEGY SEASON 2 2014-17 RIDICULOUSMOUS The City of Melbourne has just 12 TO 16 NOVEMBER released its Arts Strategy 2014–17. The strategy was developed following ANTONY HAMILTON a consultation process in which the 20 TO 24 AUGUST community and the arts sector were asked what they loved about the arts GOING NOWHERE in Melbourne and what role Council 21 TO 23 NOVEMBER should play in the arts. ‘The community told us and we listened and we now have a brave, new Arts Strategy to underpin our work over the next three years’, said Cr Leppert. In 2014 the City of Melbourne will spend more than $14 million to support artists and arts events in Melbourne to ensure the city’s distinctive culture of art- making and community participation thrives into the future. ‘This investment in the arts is an investment in the social and cultural capital of the city’, said Cr Leppert. ‘It also has an added economic benefit by stimulating employment in allied industries and of course it all adds to the overall vibrancy of Melbourne’.
