They said, ‘he’s nothing, he’s nothing.’” While some gave up on Betterthancheddar Coleman certainly wasn’t among them. In fact, even when Betterthancheddar was struggling she would tell anyone who listened that this might just be the best horse she ever trained. An Upbeat Coleman After Historic Jug Week “I’ve known all along how much talent this horse has and Double I’ve always said it to the press,” Coleman said. “But he By Bill Finley hasn’t showed it to them. With Idyllic (American Ideal) Betterthancheddar cont. p2 and Pretty Katherine (Rocknroll Hanover) in Wednesday’s Jugette and Betterthancheddar (Bettor’s Delight) in Thursday’s Little Brown Jug Coleman might just join Billy Haughton and Brett Pelling as the only trainers to pull off the Jug-Jugette double. Or maybe she’ll just win one race or the other. With the hand she has, something good figures to happen. Casie Coleman “To have any horse here, let alone three, is special,” she said. “Both my fillies seem great. They’re both very nice fillies and I think they have as good a shot as anybody. My colt’s got a good shot. You never know; it’s horse racing, but we are going in pretty confident and looks like we could have a little bit of luck.” Coleman won the Jugette last year with Western Silk (Western Terror) but has never won the Jug. Her lone starter in the race came last year when she sent out Kyle Major (Art Major), who broke in his elim and finished last. This year, she may just have the most dangerous horse in the race in Betterthancheddar, who emerged with a victory in the Cane Pace. Coleman and co-owner Steve Calhoun thought so much of their horse and his Cane performance that they decided to spend the $45,000 it took to supple- ment Betterthancheddar to the Jug. Romulus Hanover almost scratched from the championship because of a calcium deposit on his left front leg. But on this particular day the decision was made to race, and Billy Haughton's colt out maneuvered Best Of All in 2:00.3 to win the inaugural Adios. ADIOS 2 - Bye And Large - 1968 Billy Haughton was back, this time with an entry, Bye And Large and Rum Customer. Haughton had George Sholty drive Bye And Large, considered to be the weaker of the two. Haughton guessed wrong. Bye And Large won both heats. Sholty had a plane to catch and couldn't bring the horse back to the winner's circle. Somewhat embarrassed, Haughton had to do it and he accepted the trophy. ADIOS 3 - Laverne Hanover - 1969 Billy Haughton was back in the winner's circle again but not without incident. Laverne Hanover was the favorite in the first heat, but after being tapped with the whip in the stretch, he went off stride and finished last. Laverne Hanover came back to win the second heat and then won the race-off from Kat Byrd. It was the first time that Haughton had used the whip on the horse. Haughton also said it would be the last! ADIOS 4 - Most Happy Fella - 1970 Most Happy Fella And Columbia George won the two heats of the Adios. They were ordered back for a race0off. In the race0off, Columbia George dropped in behind Most Happy Fella, trailed him all the way and made his move in the stretch but couldn't make up the ground however.

Caviart Ally is off to a somewhat slow start (for her) with only one win and six thirds from 11 starts this year, The Caviart Farms' owned mare is closing in on $2 million in earnings. Last . Year she went into the Breeders Crown with seven wins, seven seconds and two thirds. She would have several more notches in the win column were it not for her nemesis Crown winner and 2019 Horse of the Year Shorten N. Caviart Alley turned the tables in 2019 however, finishing strong to win the Crown by two and a half in 1:49.3 over Shorten and Kissing in the Sand, winner of this year's lone elimination. Trained by New Zealand native Brett Pelling, (Noel Daley had her prior to 2019,) Caviart Ally's achievements include straight-heat victories in the Jugette at Delaware, Ohio, and a win in her elimination and second in the Breeders Crown Final her sophomore season; and a third in her elim and second a second time in her Breeders Crown Final in 2018. She then won last year in a romp. Brett Pelling, 61, has won 11 Breeders Crown trophies, good for fifth place in history. His most recent triumph came in 2019 in the Mare Pace with Caviart Ally. The victory came upon Pelling’s return to the Breeders Crown stage after an absence of 14 years.
