Please check your label. If it shows 2010 at the top we had not received your renewal by mid- February. Please do send it - we need every one of our members in order to continue publication! Soon it will be spring with more activities to take our time. Winter is traditionally the time of year when the heaviest amount of reseearch on families is conducted. Do take the time, if you can, to get your findings into some type of compiled form. Even if it is just for your family, the coming generations will be exceedingly thankful for the efforts you have expended. We should all reflect on what it would have meant to us, when we started, if we had in our hands some compiled family records based on research our grandparents had conducted. It would have given us something on which to build. Let’s do that for our grandchildren, too. We thank all of you who contributed this year (and in the past) to the War of 1812 project of either filming or scanning the War of 1812 pension files. The Rose Family Association made two donations to the NARA Malcolm Stern Fund in the names of members in the past few months - one of $93.00 (donated with 2010 renewals) and one of $119.00. The latter was specifically donated by members with their 2011 renewals in memory of Marsha Hoffman Rising,CG, FASG, well known in the genealogical community. Oliver (October 1992) Given the interest that readers of Liberty Bell have expressed in my article in the July issue, pp. 1-12, I now reluctantly return to the hackneyed subject of the assassination of Jackanapes Kennedy in Dallas on 22 November 1963, to clarify two points that I mentioned obiter in July. I My article dealt with the American Medical Association, which had mobilized two squads of tame physicians to discredit the widely shown cinema "J.F.K." and an almost concurrently published book by one of the physicians who had been on duty in the Parkland Hospital in Dallas when Kennedy's body was brought into the hospital. It was a desperate attempt to cover up the patent absurdity of the report on the assassination that had been contrived by a commission over which presided Earl Warren, one of the participants in the conspiracy that had expunged a President who had become a political liability. The book in question is JFK: Conspiracy of Silence, by Dr. Charles A. Crenshaw, assisted by Jens K. Hansen, a professional writer and Vice Chairman of a Research Foundation, and J. Gary Shaw, the director of the JFK Assassination Information Center in Dallas, published in New York by the New American Library (a subsidiary of Penguin Books) in April 1992. The core of the book is the personal observations of Dr. Crenshaw, then a man of thirty, who, although subject to his seniors, could be described, by analogy to military practice, as the executive officer of the hospital, since he was in charge of interns (among whom, by the way, his insistence on absolute accuracy gained him a reputation as a martinet) and of the treatment of persons critically injured in accidents or by gunfire.

In 1966, after three years of studying the JFK case, Mark Lane published a book purporting to solve it; he got mountains of media coverage, but he was wrong. In 1980, after 17 years of studying the case, David Lifton published a book purporting to solve it; Time magazine devoted two pages to his book, and he got a lot of television coverage, but he was wrong. In 1993, after 2 years of study, Gerald Posner published a book purporting to finally resolve the issues in the case, and US. News & World Report devoted 27 pages in a special issue on the book, and he is getting a lot of television coverage. He, too, is wrong, but the media seems fonder of his version than Lifton's: he says the Warren Commission was right. As he later notes, "An increasing amount of published work is a dangerous mixture of good information with a liberal dose of falsehoods. Sifting out the truth is increasingly difficult for those not well versed in the facts."1 Unfortunately, the same may be said of his own book. M. The U.S. Naval Postgraduate School began its formal existence in 1909, as the School of Marine Engineering, a part of the U.S. Naval Academy, in Annapolis, Maryland. Its establishment, impelled by realization of the need for advanced education of naval officers, came after some years of preliminary operation and development. In 1912 the School of Marine Engineering became the Postgrad­ uate Department of the Naval Academy and the scope of its engineer­ ing curricula was broadened. In 1919 a separate building on the Academy grounds was provided, and two years later the name was changed to the Postgraduate School. In the years between the wars, the School gradually extended its fields of study and accepted a few officers from other services. World War II caused an increase in en­ rollment from about 125 to over 600 and a tremendous expansion ac­ tivity; this is in contrast to the period of suspension during World War I. After hostilities ceased in 1945, a program was initiated to re­ locate the School and improve its professional status.
