SOCIETY OF AMERICA 2016 FLOWER SHOW SCHEDULE GENERAL RULES Specific Rules to a Division, Class or Section appear at the beginning of that portion of this Schedule. 1. The Epiphyllum Society of America [ESA] 57th Annual Flower Show & Sale will be held on Sunday, May 15, 2016, in Ayres Hall, Arboretum of Los Angeles County, 301 N. Baldwin Ave, Arcadia, California. Sale hours: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Show hours: 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., unless an earlier opening or closing time is directed by the Show Chairman. 2. Rules governing the eligibility of Show entries and criteria for judging are set forth in this ESA 2016 Flower Show Schedule which supersedes all previous years’ schedules. 3. The ESA Registry of Hybrids and Species will be the published reference used for epiphytic cacti entries. Cultivars not listed in the ESA Registry of Hybrids and Species, 6th Edition, or it’s Addenda; are ineligible for judging. Exceptions to this rule include flowers and of “holiday ” and unregistered epicactus seedlings. The Judges may disqualify entries of cultivars not listed in the Registry, including the aforementioned addenda, and/or incorrectly identified or placed entries. 4. Ayres Hall, adjoining access corridors and public parking will be open to Exhibitors for delivery and staging on Sunday, May 15, from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., when judging commences. 5. Exhibitors need not stage their own entries in any Competition Division except Division Two, Floral Arrangements and Sec. 48 Theme Displays. Exhibitors need not remain on the premises after staging to compete. Family units and domestic partners may compete as a single Exhibitor. Organizations or groupings of individuals not mentioned above are ineligible to compete as a single entity. Cultivars must have been in the possession of the Exhibitor for a minimum of six months prior to the Show date except in Division Two. 6. Each entry must be identified with an official entry card provided by the ESA. Completed entry cards are to be folded to conceal Exhibitor identification during judging. Close placement of cards adjacent to entries should readily identify the Exhibitor’s entry. Cards will be available prior to the Show and at the May ESA General Meeting. 7. Entries while within the confines of the Arboretum grounds and on exhibit may not be sold or advertised for sale or the Exhibitor will be disqualified, exceptions are entries in the photographic sections. Entries which appear infested, battered or otherwise unfit for exhibition may be disqualified and removed from the competition area by Show staff at the Judges’ discretion. 8. Exhibitors must have removed all transport equipment, water and debris from the Exhibit Hall prior to 9:45 a.m. the day of the show. 9. All, or portions, of the exhibit area may be closed to Exhibitors and the public beginning at 10:00 a.m. until judging or clerking of Division One, Cut Flowers, is completed, on Sunday, May 15th. No entry may be added or moved and no entry card may be modified or replaced once judging begins. Only Show Staff and Judges may rearrange or move an entry. Late entries may be placed in the exhibit area after judging and or clerking is completed but will not be eligible for awards. 10. Exhibitors who remove their entries, entry cards, or Ribbons and Rosettes from the exhibit before the Show is officially closed will be disqualified. 11. The Judging and Clerking Staff reserve the right to photograph all entries. Images photographed by Show Staff become the property of the ESA Photo Library and may be shown in public and or published in Society publications without consent of the Exhibitor. 12. Decisions by the Judges and Show Staff as directed by the Judges are final. ROSETTE AND RIBBON AWARDS AND POINTS Awarding of any Ribbon and Rosette is done solely at the Judges’ discretion. PLACE RIBBONS: For Sections 1 through 22, Judges are encouraged to award only one 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place Ribbons in each Section for each size category included within a Section, however they are allowed to award multiple 2nd, 3rd and Honorable Mention Ribbons if deemed appropriate. Sections 23 to 28 in DIVISION ONE can receive only one 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place Ribbons. Honorable Mention Ribbons can be awarded to any section from DIVISION ONE.

NOTE: Unregistered seedlings are not eligible for this award. purple ROSETTE (8 points) may be awarded in addition to 1st, 2nd or 3rd Place and Honorable Mention Ribbons for the following: President’s Choice - Chosen by ESA President from DIVISION ONE entries. Best Epicactus Flower Extra-large Size - Chosen by the Judges from DIVISION ONE entries. Best Epicactus Flower under 5” - Chosen by the Judges from DIVISION ONE entries. Best Seedling - Given with Ethel Hurst Award (8 points) - Chosen by the Judges from DIVISION ONE, CLASS TWO entries. Best Floral Arrangement - Chosen by Judges from DIVISION TWO entries. Best - Chosen by Judges from DIVISION THREE entries. Best Photograph - Chosen by Judges from DIVISION FOUR entries. Best Display - Chosen by Judges from DIVISION FIVE entries.

TROPHY AWARDS Trophies are awarded according to the total Ribbon Points accumulated by an Exhibitor in each individual Division. Division One - Cut Flowers: Four Trophies (First Place through Fourth Place) Best Epicactus Seedling (Class 2): Ethel Hurst Award, One Trophy Division Two-Arrangements: One Trophy Division Three Plants: One Trophy Division Four Photographs: One Trophy Division Five Displays: One Trophy SWEEPSTAKES TROPHY Awarded to the Exhibitor who meets the following three criteria: Wins a Trophy in any Division, (Trophy need not be First Place,) and Earns at least one Place Ribbon in any other Division, and Accumulates the most Ribbon Points among Exhibitors meeting the first two criteria.

COMPETITION DIVISIONS, CLASSES AND SECTIONS DIVISION ONE - CUT FLOWERS SPECIFIC RULES - There is no restriction to the number of entries an Exhibitor may place in any Section. However, an Exhibitor shall not receive more than one Place Award for the same cultivar in a Section except due to size variation. Exhibitors may enter a cultivar in more than one Section because of obvious variations of color or size, or in Class 7; Collections (Sections 26 through 28). Flowers are to be displayed in a “right-side-up” orientation. NOTE: “Christmas,” “Easter,” “Thanksgiving” and “Holiday” cactus are not eligible for Division One competition. CLASS 1. SINGLE CUT FLOWERS - MEDIUM TO EXTRA LARGE. Named and registered epicactus, sizes medium (5” to 7” in diameter), large (7” to 9” in diameter), and extra-large (over 9” in diameter). Section 1. Single cut flowers of unnamed epiphytic cactus hybrid seedlings of the denomination class registered by the ESA, including aporophyllum. When known, hybridizer, parentage and seedling numbers should appear on the entry card unless compliance discloses Exhibitor. All sizes. Section 14. Predominantly White or White with Other Color(s) Section 15. Predominantly Yellow or Yellow with Other Color(s) Section 16. Predominantly Orange or Orange with Other Color(s) Section 17. CLASS 3. SINGLE CUT FLOWERS - SMALL AND EXTRA SMALL. Named and registered epicactus less than five inches in diameter including Aporophyllum Section 21. All colors and color combinations - size small (3-5”). Section 22. All colors and color combinations - size extra-small (under 3”).

CLASS 4. ESA Heritage Epicactus Flower Named and registered epicactus cultivars listed in the ESA Directory, known to have existed prior to the founding of The Epiphyllum Society of America, May 5, 1940. A list of eligible cultivars will be posted on the website. A list will also and available on the day of the show. Section 23. All colors and sizes.

CLASS 5. SHOWCASE HYBRIDIZERS FOR 2015. Section 24. Featured Hybridizer/Registrant for 2015 is: Cactus Pete (CP) & Ernest Schwemmer (ES). All colors and sizes.

CLASS 6. EPIPHYTIC CACTI SPECIES. Section 25. Flowers of any epiphytic cactus genera, all colors and sizes.

CLASS 7. COLLECTIONS. Flowers may be displayed on stands provided by the Society or in containers furnished by the Exhibitor. Section 26. Three-of-a-Kind. Three blooms of equal size of one registered cultivar, any color. Section 27. Sprays. Three or more blooms of one cultivar on a cut stem. Section 28. Common Denominator. Three or more epicactus flowers presented with unifying factor such as shared word in their epithet (name), sister seedlings, etc. Common denominator must be stated on the entry card.

DIVISION TWO - FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS SPECIFIC RULES - In all floral arrangements, the following guidelines apply: Epiphytic cactus flower(s) must be the center of attention and must be oriented “right-side-up.” The use of mats and bases is recommended though not a requirement. Arrangements may not utilize more of table width than designated by the Show Staff. The Exhibitor need not have grown the flowers. No imitation plant materials allowed (silk, plastic, wood, etc.) except in Class 9. NOTE: Individual flowers used in a Floral Arrangement are not eligible to receive awards from other categories. Arrangement must be staged by the Exhibitor. Any arrangement may be staged for a horizontal or vertical surface.

CLASS 8. Traditional Container(s) - Entries in single or multiple “traditional” floral containers such as vases or baskets using fresh plant materials only. The flowers and foliage of other plant genera may be used. Section 29. One epicactus or epiphytic cactus species flower may be used. No accessories Section 30. More than one epicactus or epiphytic cactus species flower. No accessories. One or more containers may be used. (Multiple flowers and multiple containers allowed)

CLASS 9. Traditional Container(s) - Entries in single or multiple traditional containers such as vases or baskets. Use any plant material- fresh or dried. Accessories must be used, such as figurines, stones, etc. Section 31. One epicactus or epiphytic cactus species flower. Section 32. More than one epicactus or epiphytic cactus species flower.

CLASS 10. Non-traditional containers such as wood, driftwood, stone, glass, etc. may be used. Any plant material, fresh or dried may be used. Section 33. One epicactus or epiphytic cactus species flower. Section 34. More than one epicactus or epiphytic cactus species flower.

CLASS 11. THEMED FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS . Entries may use any container or material to carry out the theme. Have fun. Section 35. Any number of epicactus or epiphytic cactus species flower(s) to carry out the arrangement theme. Theme must be stated,. Section 36. Any number of epicactus or epiphytic cactus species flower(s) to carry out the Show Theme of “Exotica”. DIVISION THREE - PLANTS SPECIFIC RULES - Plants placed in competition should be groomed and free of obvious disease or infestation. If a container cannot be groomed, using a jardiniere is recommended. For the Classes of DIVISION THREE the ribbon class count is: 1st Place - Blue Ribbon (9-points) 2nd Place - Red Ribbon (6-points) 3rd Place - Yellow Ribbon (4-points) Honorable Mention - White Ribbon (2-points)

CLASS 12. EPICACTUS PLANTS. (Epiphytic cactus hybrids, “epiphyllums”) including aporophyllumns Section 37. Registered cultivars - any color or size, in bud or bloom - in hanging containers. Section 38. Registered cultivars - any color or size, in bud or bloom - staked, trellised or pedestal plants. Section 39. Unregistered epicactus seedlings, any color and size, in bud or bloom - in hanging containers. Section 40. Unregistered epicactus seedlings, any color and size, in bud or bloom - staked, trellised or pedestal plants.

CLASS 13. EPIPHYTIC CACTUS SPECIES PLANTS. For specie names not listed below, consult the Index of Synonyms (pages 13-18) from the Registry of Hybrids and Species and Addendum 37 for correct nomenclature. Section 41. Plants from the following genera: Epiphyllum, , , , and . Need not be in bud or bloom - in hanging containers. Section 42. Plants from the following genera: Epiphyllum, Disocactus, Hylocereus, Selenicereus, Strophocactus and Weberocereus. Need not be in bud or bloom - staked, trellised or pedestal plants. Section 43. Plants from the following genera: Hatiora, Lepismium, Lymanbensonia, Pfeiffera, , and - in hanging containers. Need not be in bud or bloom. Section 44. Plants from the following genera: Hatiora, Lepismium, Lymanbensonia, Pfeiffera, Pseudorhipsalis, Rhipsalis and Schlumbergera - staked, trellised or pedestal plants.

DIVISION FOUR - PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINTS SPECIFIC RULES - The Exhibitor must be the photographer. Photographs, which received an award in previous years’ competitions, are ineligible. Minimum print size is 5”x7”. Entries must be framed or matted or both and must be hung on a vertical surface provided by Show Staff. Subject must be identified on the entry card.

CLASS 14. REPRESENTATIONAL STYLE. Judging criteria: the quality of the photograph itself, e.g. composition, balance, focus, etc are the primary considerations.
