2010 Australasian Police & Emergency Services Games ENTRY BOOK 1 2010 Australasian Police & Emergency Services Games

It’s arrived! After meetings, consultations, hours on the road and much deliberation the 2010 Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games schedule is complete.

Great venues in spectacular locations and competitor friendly time frames are what you will enjoy whilst visiting and competing in this great state.

The Games team has worked towards securing venues that are competitor, spectator and family friendly. The majority of the venues are centrally located and are easily accessible, keeping transportation at manageable prices. Use your free Metro Greencard to get around their timetabled routes, for free! Or otherwise contact Bargain Car Rentals for a great price on team vehicles.

› Tassie will also offer the greatest “trout fishing” experience ever held in the games history. Over two days, under the guidance of an Australian representative at the World Championships in 2006, a maximum of 70 lucky anglers will experience two of the best trout fishing lakes and rivers in the quest for gold.

› Power lifters will muscle their way to gold in the Hobart City Mall on Wednesday 24th February. Competitors will strut their stuff in front of the media and the Tasmanian public.

› Follow in the footsteps of Venus Williams and play Tennis whilst enjoying elevated viewing areas overlooking the City and Derwent River and comfortable amenities.

› Play Soccer and Touch Football on great surfaces next to the beach, with Mount Wellington as your backdrop.

› ‘Tug of War on the Green’, Friday the 26th of February, will take place at the Police Academy, Rokeby. State against state, agency against agency, bragging rights and gold up for grabs. This will be one event not to be missed, with transport to and from the venue available from the city. A great social afternoon for participants and spectators alike is planned.

› on the beautiful Derwent River, premier Netball, Swimming and Hockey venues are just of some of the action and venues proposed for the games.

So whether it be as an individual or a team come prepared to “Conquer the Isle”, in Hobart 2010.

2 2010 Australasian Police & Emergency Services Games ENTRY BOOK Message - Chairman Australia & New Zealand Police Games Federation

On behalf of the Australia and New Zealand Police Games Federation and all the competitors from eligible Police and Emergency Service Agencies from throughout Australasia I would like to convey my thanks and appreciation to the Tasmania Police Service, the Tasmania Fire Service and the Tasmania State Emergency Service for hosting the 2010 Australasian Police & Emergency Services Games. The Games will be presented as a result of many months of dedicated hard work and planning.

Both local and world events of recent times help highlight the significant role that Police and Emergency Service workers play in our society. Our people every day put their duty to the public ahead of personal self interest. The Games provide an opportunity for the public to show their appreciation and support of our collective endeavours.

It is with great pleasure that we welcome competitors from a growing range of Police and Emergency Service agencies from throughout Australasia as we gather in a spirit of friendly competition and rivalry. The Games not only provide the opportunity to help promote the adoption of a healthier lifestyle but also the opportunity to enhance camaraderie and esprit-de-corps between all competitors and competing agencies.

Hobart and the State of Tasmania will provide our competitors with outstanding sporting facilities as well as the opportunity to combine their sporting pursuits with some spectacular tourism opportunities. To this end the Organising Committee have engendered excellent support from Events Tasmania and Tourism Tasmania. You are encouraged to either travel to Tasmania before the Games or stay on after the Games to enjoy the wonders of this beautiful State.

I encourage you to not only enter the Games yourself, but to use whatever means at your disposal to encourage other eligible competitors to enter and join us to “Conquer the Isle” 20-27 February, 2010.

Inspector Danny Bodycoat APM Chairman Australia & New Zealand Police Games Federation

2010 Australasian Police & Emergency Services Games ENTRY BOOK 3 Discover Tasmania…

Tasmania is nature’s playground. More than 40 per cent of the State is World Heritage Area, national park or reserve. With 3000 kilometers of walking tracks, it is easy to explore large sections on foot.

Almost wherever you go, you’ll also be tempted by oceans or rivers: rafting, canoeing, , sea kayaking and cruising are a great way to appreciate the island’s dramatic coastline and waterways.

Guided multi-day treks of Cradle Mountain, the Bay of Fires and Maria Island include environmentally sensitive accommodation, local gourmet foods and fine Tasmanian wines.

Cycle descents of Mt Wellington and Ben Lomand are the ultimate in mild-to-wild adventure (and it’s refreshing to know the wind in your hair is the cleanest air in the world).

In the capital, Hobart, the stately sandstone warehouses of once stored grain, wool, whale oil, apples and imported goods. Nowadays, you can wander under heavy stone arches to find jewellers, cafes, restaurants, theatres, bookshops, fashion boutiques and artists’ galleries.

To the north, in the Tamar Valley, growers and makers welcome passers-by at farm gates. From prized black truffles, to leatherwood honey, plump oysters and smoked salmon, the Tamar and north-east Tasmania are a food lovers’ nirvana.

Tasmania has been melding chic, contemporary styling to its reputation for thoughtfully preserved heritage for some time, and you’ll find outstanding examples all the way from Hobart’s waterfront to the far north-west coast. There are smart accommodation options near Port Arthur Historic Site and in Tarraleah, New Norfolk, Launceston, Bothwell, Stanley and Woodbridge.

Among impressive new experiences that will tempt you to stay on after the games are golfing developments that harmonise superb courses and premier accommodation with the island’s exceptional landscape. Elsewhere, whisky tours reveal the mysteries of distilling, from historic mill to pure, single-malt satisfaction.

Whether your idea of a holiday is -fishing in a crystal clear mountain stream, enjoying a concert by one of the best small orchestras in the world, or treating yourself to a spa on the edge of the wilderness, you’ll want to return to Tasmania time and time again.

Access to Tasmania has never been easier with excellent air services and daily sailings from Melbourne. If you’re participating in the AP & ES Games why not bring the car and family and explore our island at your leisure before and after the event?

2010 Australasian Police & Emergency Services Games ENTRY BOOK 25 Event MOUNTAIN BIKE

Coordinator Alison Mackay Email: [email protected]

Venue Glenorchy Mountain Bike Park Tolosa Street, Glenorchy.

Competition Date Friday 26 February 9am. Saturday 27 February 9am.

Description Day 1: Cross Country Day 2: Downhill Cross Country This is a course will cater to the strengths of every XC rider without totally exposing their weaknesses. The 5km course includes a little of everything and the rider that may not excel in one particular area, but performs quite well climbing, descending and negotiating a variety of technical tracks will be in with some chance of doing well. There are short sections of steep climb, but not so long as to put the non-climber at a distinct disadvantage. There are also a couple of longer, less demanding climbs that will put the climber at some advantage but less able climbers will not lose their race there if they commit. Downhill sections of the course are a combination of technical, with a couple of very tight switchbacks plus some faster sections of single track and a short fire-trail section for those with real speed. An undulating “rollercoaster” style section is also included where a combination of power and technical skill could see a rider make up time. Approximately 18 –23 minutes a lap. Races will be approximately 1.5 to 2 hours in duration (depending on age group i.e. A Group = 18 – 29 Open). A group 6 laps, B group 5 laps, C group 4 laps, D group 3 laps and E group 2 laps.

26 2010 Australasian Police & Emergency Services Games ENTRY BOOK Downhill The DH course is fast and a spectator’s dream! After a fast rocky start with a small but unforgiving jump in the first 40metres, riders cross the road into a very rocky section that twists and turns its way down to a 2 meter drop off, with a more forgiving line for lesser mortals. The track turns hard right and winds through the gum forest which includes a number of jumps, fallen trees, drops and rock walls to negotiate before winding back to follow the road through a very lumpy rock garden, then back to more of the same with some very fast and demanding track among the trees. Riders burst from the trees, some dropping onto a fire road crossing, others metres off the ground having taken the ramp to launch across the gap and landing in a fast, narrow section among the pines for a last concentrated effort before exiting to an open section above the village, finishing across a series of fast jumps and a massive berm turning them toward the finish line at the centre of the village. The Downhill event will be conducted on the Saturday and is expected to be demanding and only competent riders should consider this event. It is very important to understand though that the danger is relevant to the speed in which you wish to travel. Competitors are required to complete a walkthrough of the course and complete a practice run/s prior to competing. Practice will commence at 0900 hours and finish at 10;30hrs. Races will commence at 1100 hours sharp. Sign on will be between 0800 and 1100 hours. lutely no late sign on will be accepted after this time. It is recommended that competitors wear an approved full face helmet, shin, elbow guards and body armour for this event. Dual suspension bikes recommended.
