2019 GEORGIA FOOTBALL WELCOME TO ATHENS!

GEORGIA VS. NOTRE DAME

It’s why so many of us made the trip to South Bend two years ago. It’s why I did. Everyone was so nice to us there, so friendly to their barking visitors in red, and I know many in Athens are eager to return the favor, to show them how we do college football down here. It is a legitimate honor to have them here. When you’re hosting Notre Dame, which you’ve never done before, you’re doing something special.

But I can’t help but think there’s something else going on here. After all, you can make an argument that while Notre Dame represents all that is glorious about college football’s past, it’s Georgia that best represents its future. Georgia has so much tradition of its own, of course, not least of which is a Sugar Bowl victory over Notre Dame that some of you might remember. But what Georgia and Kirby Smart is building feels like the bridge to the game’s next set of eternal memories. Is there a college football program that feels more set up for the future than Georgia’s does? When you are here for something special happening, like we all are, you want to mark signposts, you want to say you were there as it was all going on. We’ve had that South Bend game, the 2017 National Championship Game, the Rose Bowl, fans are going spend the next two years saying the that thrilling, agonizing Natty at the Benz, a fantastic same thing about us. and increasingly under-appreciated 2018 season.
