A 1964 children’s book written by Jeff Brown, Flat Stanley features the story of Stanley Lambchop who was flattened when the bulletin board over his bed fell on him one night. Since that time, the story has taken on a life of its own. Flat Stanley projects became teaching tools, as students included pictures of Flat Stanley in letter-writing campaigns to see how far he could travel. In 1994, Dale Hubert, a Grade 3 teacher in London, Ontario, Canada, began the Flat Stanley Project . He invited other teachers to take part by hosting flat visitors and to encourage their students to write their own Flat Stanley journals. Jeff Brown, the author of the Flat Stanley book, was delighted with the Flat Stanley Project as it renewed interest in the book which resulted in a sequel almost 40 years after the original. As the internet grew and became available to educational institutions, high-tech Flat Stanley started whooshing by at phenomenal speeds as he raced across the corners of the globe. In fact, in 2010, Darren Haas, a huge Flat Stanley advocate and applications architect, approached Dale with the idea of applying Dale’s Flat Stanley concept to an app for the iPhone.

COLD SPRING HARBOR CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT ANNUAL REPORT 2017-2018 October 9, 2018 Cold Spring Harbor Central School District The 2017-2018 school year was one in which we created a variety of new learning experiences for our students, all behind the efforts of Cold Spring Harbor teachers and leaders to prepare them for the future. Following the vision driving the district’s board of education goals, all teachers and leaders continued to build an awareness of the Next Generation Learning Standards through a diverse professional development workshops offered by staff developers from around the country and members of the Cold Spring Harbor faculty. Professional development occurred in numerous content areas such as English Language Arts, math, social studies, science, and technology. Teachers also received professional learning in the revised New York State Standards for the Arts. These efforts continue to support many goals including the district’s work in building authentic research experiences for all students in kindergarten through graduation. In addition, our Science Research Program continued to flourish and its expansion provided students with practical experiences and even an opportunity to highlight their work at the Science Research Symposium at the high school, a true example of providing students with opportunities to share high level research with their peers and the community. While there are many highlights to the school year in relation to the district’s goals in the area of technology, the Creative Learning Labs assembled at the two elementary buildings provided students, teachers, and even parents the chance to experience a truly redefined classroom. Designed by teachers and leaders, these state-of-the-art spaces outfitted with flexible furniture, afforded students with the ability to experience enhanced and differentiated learning environments.

The project can improve not only the ability of geography-awareness but also inter-personal relationships. However, the project lacks a user-friendly and interactive digital map to illustrate all Flat Stanley journals. Therefore, in this document, we used Google applications to implement a method and a customizable webpage, making it easy for teachers and student to upload, edit, and map their own Flat Stanley journals on the Internet. Background The Flat Stanley project was begun by Dale Hubert, a Grade 3 teacher in London, Ontario, Canada. He encouraged other teachers and students to make their own flat visitor, called Flat Stanley. First, these students took their Flat Stanleys for a few days and kept journals Then, the Flat Stanleys and journals were sent to other schools where students there treated the Flat Stanleys as special guests and continued completing the journals. At the end, the Flat Stanleys and the journals were returned to the original students.

This year’s team of competition chefs Vito Bell and Bob Heide and non-competition chef Skip Kemp were the 11th consecutive Chili Team to represent the St. George Lighthouse Association at the island’s Chili Cook-Off. SGLA started competing in the Chili Cook-Off in 2006, and in 2008 the group won the Best Booth Award for a clever booth created by former SGLA director Richard Saucer to look like (guess what???) the lighthouse. The huge pot of non-competition chili with beans cooked up by SGLA President Skip Kemp sold out quickly and was served both as tasting samples and as a component of the team’s newest offering,“ Frito Pies.” The popular pies feature Frito chips topped with chili and garnished with shredded cheese, chopped onions, and sour cream.
