Appendix 1

Figure A1. Graphical display of fecal surveys. At each site, we searched for mammal scats weekly along random transects from September to February during seasons 2005–2006 and 2006–2007. To ensure that samples were representative of each site, we established between 11 and 13 starting points (represented by circles) distributed regularly along the plot edges. Each observer followed a non-regular zig-zag path from a starting point (e.g. S1, S2, S5, S12) to a non-fixed point on the opposite side of the plot. Then, the observer returned back to the original side following a different path. A total of 100 surveys were made for each site in the two seasons (i.e. overall 300 surveys).

Figure A2. Variation in cover percentage around feces located in non- vacant microsites (i.e. those in which plant cover was equal or higher than 3%) depending on (a) site and (b) frugivore . Boxes represent median, 25th and 75th percentiles; lines indicate 1.5 times the interquartile range from the box.

Figure A3. Relative frequency of occurrence of fecal samples containing seeds at a maximum distance of 1 m from the canopy of different plant species depending on site. Blue colors indicate significantly lower occurrence of feces near a given plant species than expected, whereas green colors indicate significantly higher occurrence than expected. Grey colors indicate no significant differences. Aa*: Asparagus acutifolius, Ca*: , Ch*: Chamaerops humilis, Ci: Cistus sp., Cm: undetermined Compositae, Cs: Cistus salviifolius, Es: Erica scoparia, Hh: halimifolium, Hc: Hypericum calycinum, Jp*: Juniperus phoenicea, Ju: Juncus spp., Ls: Lavandula stoechas, Oa*: Osyris alba, Ot: other, species found in less than 2 samples and grouped together, Pa: Pteridium aquilinum, Pl*: Pistacia lentiscus, Pp: Pinus pinea, Ro: Rosmarinus officinalis, Ru*: Rubus ulmifolius, Sg: Stauracanthus genistoides, Th: Thymus sp., Um: Ulex minor. Species marked with an asterisk produce fleshy fruits. 2

Figure A4. Relative frequency of occurrence of faecal samples containing seeds at a maximum distance of 1 m from the canopy of different plant species depending on the dispersal season. Same conventions as in Fig. A3.
