Abstract: The genus Zamia is morphologically and ecologically the most diverse of the order Cycadales. Throughout its history this genus has been restricted to the New World and is presently almost entirely restricted to the Neotropics. Unusual anatomical traits of the leaflets, such as the sunken stomata and thick cuticle, are common in this and related genera. The objective of this research was to study and compare the leaflet anatomy of Zamia acuminata and Z. pseudomonticola and establish possible phylogenetic relationships between the anatomical traits and the near relatives of these species. The leaf material was obtained from living plants and then processed for electron microscopy study. We found that both species are very similar to each other and to Z. fairchildiana, and that they share several unusual traits with other species of the genus, such as the parenchyma morphology, the spatial distribution of tissues between the veins and the stomata morphology. The main differ- ences between these species were seen in their fiber clusters and in the abundance of trichome basal cells on the epidermis. The anatomical similarities between the three species could be the result of their close phylogenetic relationship and the divergences between them could be the result of recent speciation during the Pleistocene, resulting from geological changes in Southern Costa Rica. -

A Review of the Cenozoic Fossil Record of the Genus Zamia L. (Zamiaceae, Cycadales) with Recognition of a Ne
A review of the Cenozoic fossil record of the genus Zamia L. (Zamiaceae, Cycadales) with recognition of a new species from the late Eocene of Panama – evolution and biogeographic inferences Boglárka ErdEi, MichaEl calonjE, austin hEndy & nicolas Espinosa Modern Zamia L. is the second largest genus among cycads, however reliably identified fossil occurrences of the genus have so far been missing. Previously, fossil “Zamia” species were established in large numbers on the basis of macromorphological similarity of foliage fragments to living Zamia species. However, a reinvestigation of specimens assigned formerly to Zamia and the relevant literature provided no clear-cut evidence for their assignment to this genus. We investigated a newly recovered fossil specimen from marine sediments of the Gatuncillo Formation, near Buena Vista, Colon Province, Central Panama. It represents the first unequivocal fossil record of the genus confirmed by epidermal as well as macromorphological characters and it is described as Zamia nelliae Erdei & Calonje sp. nov. Foraminiferal and nannoplankton biostratigraphy of the locality indicates a late Eocene to earliest Oligocene age. Morphometric comparison of epidermal features of Z. nelliae with those of modern Zamia species suggests similarity with those of the Caribbean Zamia clade. The fossil record of Zamia from Panama implies that the genus appeared by the end of the Eocene or earliest Oligocene in the Central American–Caribbean region, however, the origin of the genus is still unresolved. The record of Z. nelliae may challenge former concepts on the evolution of Zamia and raises an “intermediate” hypothesis on its origin in the Central American–Caribbean region and its subsequent dispersal south- and northwards. -

Summary Cycads are an ancient group of plants comprising three families (Cycadaceae, Stangeriaceae and Zamiaceae), 11 genera and ca. 300 species. They are distributed through 58 range States in tropical and subtropical parts of North America, South America, Central America and the Caribbean, Asia, Africa and Oceania. A large number of species (52%) are threatened with extinction in the wild and the two most prominent threats are habitat destruction and trade in wild collected plants. This report summarizes information on the taxonomy, life history, distribution and diversity of cycad taxa and contains an analysis of trade between 1977 and 2002. The analysis of trade is based on the UNEP-WCMC database of CITES annual report data together with information obtained from 19 range States, cycad experts, the TRAFFIC network and the IUCN/ SSC Cycad Specialist Group. The main focus is on trade in wild collected specimens of Appendix II taxa and compliance with Article IV of the Convention, in the context of the implementation of Resolution Conf. 12.8 on Review of Significant Trade in specimens of Appendix-II species. Despite the fact that all cycads are listed in Appendix I or II, populations continue to decline in some range States as a consequence of unsustainable or illegal trade, and they may even be the first taxa to become extinct in the wild while listed on the CITES Appendices. As a result, the report includes information on a range of issues related to cycad trade. -

Introduction Cycads (Cycadophyta) are dioecious, palm-like, gymnosperm (non-flowering seed plants) trees and shrubs found broadly across the tropical belt of the world (Fig. 1). Cycads are veritable living fossils once thought to date from the Mesozoic as early as 280 million years ago (mya); however, recent reevaluation of the fossil evidence indicates they originated in the upper Paleozoic, more than 300 mya (Pott et al., 2010). They predated, and were contemporaneous with, the dinosaurs and have survived to the present. As a group, the cycads have been systematically restructured, making use of morphological and molecular characters and cladistic analysis (Caputo et al., 2004). Three families are currently considered valid (Cycadaceae, Stangeriaceae, and Zamiaceae), with a world total of about 330 described species (Osborne et al., 2012). Cycas and Zamia are the most widely distributed and researched genera. Cycads are solely represented in Panama by the genus Zamia, with 16 described species and a new one soon to be described; of these 17 species, 12 are endemic. Although these 17 species are many more than were previously known and/or described by earlier workers (Stevenson, 1993; Schutzman et al., 1998), still many others are likely to be found, especially in the forested areas near the Colombian border. Conclusion Abstract We present the first-ever worldwide compilation of traditional cycad names and discuss the significance of our findings. Using all available cycad literature and much personal consultation, we have compiled a table of scientific names, localities, languages, vernacular names and, where known, translations into English. We have uncovered at least one vernacular name for 145 of the 302 presently- known cycad species and a total of 494 vernacular names in 128 languages. Patterns of meaning revealed in our compendium include cycad-palm and cycad-fern homologies, a strong maize analogy (in Mesoamerican countries), toponymic references, allusions to morphological features, non-Western binomial taxonomies, references to local folklore, and references to economic uses of cycad products.
