FOREWORD

The 1973 eqition of the directory of Mental Health Resources in the, Greater Washington Area has been prepared by Public Inquiries Section, Office of Communications, National Insti.tute of Mental Health. Orginally designed for use withi~ NIMH, the directory is now distributed to groups and individ uals outside the 'agency who have indicated 'a need for such a listing.

The Washington a,rea has been, divided into four, districts: District of , Columbia, Montgomery and Prince Georges 'Counties, and Virginia. The State , 'MelltalHealth Authority and Mental Health Associations are listed for each distri,ct. The resources of each district are then listed in the order of area served, from those without any restrictions or residence requirements to those limited to the tmmediate neighborhood ..

Such an arrangement will help locate all of the resources available as quickly as possible. Thus a call for help for an emotionally disturbed ~hilcl residing in Prince Georges County can be referred to the resourc~s listed undeJ;Prince Georges Cotinty Children and alsp to the resources in the other districts that have no residence restriction or that accept children from the entire metropolitan area.

For ready reference, special sections list emergency, information and re,feJ;J;al, after cat:e, , and. miscellaneous services. Information on' drug abuse help and facilities can be obtained from the National Clear inghouse for Drug Abuse Information, National Institute of Mental Health, 5600 Fisher:;; Lane, Rock.ville" Maryland 20852; telephone: 301, 443:...4443 •
