U-PIC BLUEBERRIES IN LANOKA HARBOR

July has been proclaimed by the Dept. of Agriculture as Blueberry month…and right nor they are ripe for the picking. Why purchase the generic boxes of the fruit sold in local supermarkets when you can pick your own! Where to do that? Pick your own Blueberry Farms are spread throughout Ocean, Burlington and Atlantic counties. There is one in your own backyard. U-Pic Blueberry Farm is located on Rte. 9, Lanoka Harbor, right across from Wal-Mart Store. See the sign, just pull in the dirt road, and there sits 5-acres of blueberry bushes. It’s as simple as that. Michael Ofsanko, worker at the farm, will hand you a bag and you are on your own to roam through the field and look for the biggest juiciest blueberries you will never see in stores. What fun! Bring the kids. They will be delighted. The blueberry is Native to North America, the world’s leading blueberry producer, accounting for 90 percent of world production. Their harvest runs through mid-April through early October. Peak harvest is July, the prime blueberry season. Is is grown in 35 out of 50 states. Substitute fresh for canned whenever u can. Sip a blueberry tea and help reduce the chance of getting cancer and heart disease, experts say. Freeze them, unwashed, is a tight plastic bag, or on a cookie sheets, and then fill your plastic sealable bag. They play a great role in your health. Blueberries get their deep blue color from anthocyanin, a pigment long thought to have health benefits Choose firm berries, free of mold, moisture or damage. Don’t wash till ready to eat, or use in a recipe. Eat within 3-5 days of purchase. Blueberry pancakes and blueberry pie are favorites, but blueberries can be tossed into salads or stirred into whole grain pilaf as well. A beverage made with blueberries was a staple for soldiers during the Civil War. They are the most popular berry and can be eaten fresh, baked, dried, canned or frozen. They are vigorous growing plants that don’t severe pruning and are resistant to pest disease. Centuries before the arrival of the colonists, Native Americans gathered blueberries from the forests and the bogs. Consumed fresh, and also preserved, blueberries were revered and folklore developed around them since the blossom end of each berry, the calyx, forms the shape of a perfect 5 pointed star. The elders would tell of how the “Great Spirit” sent “starberries” to relieve the children’s hunger during famous famines. Blueberries were also used for medical purposes from the leaves and roots. The tea was made from the leaves of the plant and thought to be good for the blood. The juice was used to treat coughs. The juice made an excellent dye for cloth. Dried berries were also crushed into a powder and rubbed on meats for flavor. A beef jeky called Sautauthig was made with dried berries and consumed year around. In the 1980’s a Blueberry canning industry began in Northeast America. When the settlers arrived from England, during the 17th century, many perished due to the land and climate change, and they couldn’t rely on supplies from England. The land was different. Farming failed, many perished. Those who survived built and established farms. Native Americans showed them how to plant corn and blueberries, skills that helped them survive. Blueberries became an important foor source, were preserved, and later canned. So when you see blueberries around this month, think how long they have survived. And if you want to gather your own, stop at U-Pic, across from WalMart, grab a bag, and roam through the field collecting one of the most delicious, and healthful fruits, you could find, The Blueberry. And d your part to help celebrate July as National Blueberry month. ISLAND BEACH STATE PARK HAS UNEXPECTED VISITORS.

A pair of piping plovers is now nesting on the beach at Island Beach State Park, the first ocean side nest in more than 25 years and the first in the park in more than a decade. This is great news for recovery of this federally threatened and state endangered bird. NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife biologists hope this is an indication of a rebounding population after sharp declines witnessed between 2003 and 2014.

For more information on the nest, including its impact on park visitors, and links to more information, visit http://www. njfishandwildlife.com/news/2016/ploversreturn.htm on the Division’s website. 22 July 8th, 2016 The Ocean County Gazette - www.ocgazette.news UPDATED NOVINS PLANETARIUM SCHEDULE p.m. This is our newest sky show format beginning at sunset.
