Author David Potter revels in the joy that a victory over the old rivals brings to the Celtic support, reliving some of the club’s greatest ever derby-day triumphs from the 1890s right up to date. Here is an expert selection of 50 such legendary occasions, rich in detail and atmosphere, and all the topic of fervent discussion over the years. We hear of Jimmy Quinn’s hat-trick in 1904, the astonishing Scottish Cup semi-final of 1925, the 7-1 Scottish League Cup Final of 1957, the 4-0 thrashing in the 1969 Scottish Cup Final, the 6-2 ‘Demolition Derby’ of 2000, plus many landmark games of a more recent vintage. Celtic’s greatest players – Henrik Larsson, Jimmy McGrory, Patsy Gallacher, Charlie Tully, Jimmy Johnstone, Billy McNeill and Scott Brown – appear frequently in these pages, as do many others who all played their part in what is traditionally the greatest party of them all, when Celtic beat Rangers! Matches – 1 April 1970 – Leeds United 0 Celtic 1 European Cup semi final 1st leg – Elland Road – 45,505 Scorers: None Leeds United: Sprake, Reaney, Cooper, Bremner (Bates), Charlton, Madeley, Lorimer, Clarke, Jones, Giles, Gray Celtic: Williams, Hay, Gemmell, Murdoch, McNeill, Brogan, Johnstone, Connelly (Hughes), Wallace, Auld, Lennox Geoffrey Green in the Times on 21 March 1970: “When Leeds and Celtic were paired in the European Cup, groans of disappointment all over the Roman chamber greeted the announcement. Certainly it was the last thing wanted both north and south of the River Tweed as everybody had hoped that these two would fashion the first all-British climax. As it is, both clubs can now consider this as the real final, though that, of course, will be of small consolation to the loser.” The eloquent and loquacious Green, so often accused of hyperbole, got it absolutely right on this occasion, for the contest between two clubs who were each battling for their own treble of League, Cup and European Cup quickly assumed the status of Britain‟s club championship, an objective means of settling the heated debate about national superiority. Of course, the presence of Bremner, Lorimer and Gray in the United side, bolstered by a Welshman and an Irishman devalued the currency of Leeds as representing England. Or is that quibbling? The football poet, Seamus Murphy captured the simmering rage of football followers north of the border, when he penned the following poem in later years: One day down in England in the year 69 The great Leeds United were on cloud number 9, They'd just become champs and were over the moon, Next season in Europe just can't come too soon.

Appointed A Scotland team manager only two months earlier, on 11 April 1967 he oversaw his team beating England, then reigning world champions, at Wembley, English football’s impressive and emblematic stadium. It was his first full international in charge and England’s first loss in 20 games. To defeat the world champions, Scotland’s most intense and enduring rivals, in these circumstances was an outstanding achievement, like winning the Grand National on your debut ride or running a four-minute mile in your first race. The date is enshrined in Scottish football history as one of its most memorable days. In fans’ folklore, it was the day when Scotland became ‘unofficial world champions’ by knocking England off their throne – and what could be sweeter for a Scottish fan? As Brown said, in his understated way at the time, ‘It was a fairly daunting task for your first game in charge.

Victory a must tonight Our European visitors tonight, Legia Warsaw, were very much an unknown quantity when the second round draw of the Cup-Winners' Cup was made. So, over the past few days, we have all been doing our homework on our Polish guests. Jocky Scott didn't have much luck when he first tried to visit Poland to have a look at them, because their Embassy in London couldn't get a necessary visa through quickly enough for us. Then games were postponed to allow the Poles to prepare for last week's international against England at Wembley. Jocky did, however, manage to assess Warsaw on Sunday when he took in their game agaist Lodz, so we now know all about their current form. In fact, it was a hectic spell for Jocky, as he was also in Bucharest last Wednesday taking in Romania's game against Bulgaria for Andy Roxburgh. Right now, though, it's Warsaw who concern us. To get a general feel of the Alex Smith Polish style we also had Drew Jarvie in London lastweek. Drew was at White Hart Lane on Tuesday for the under Switzerland.
