President’s Message This is the last round before we have our first break for the 2010 season with the long weekend seeing no matches played on the 13th of June. I want to congratulate Corey Bruinstroop (U14) and Lachie Sullivan (U13) on their inter league selection. For our Under 9 and Under 10 teams it is past the halfway point of the season with only 4 rounds for Under 9’s and 5 rounds for Under10’s until the Lightening Premiership games. Once again East Malvern has put its hand up to host one of the divisions of the Lightening Premiership and when we establish which division that is I will be looking for some volunteers to assist on the day.

As we approach the halfway mark in the season it is important to reflect on what the club has achieved in 2010. Whilst the club has clearly grown from 2009 to 2010 there are certain areas that we can still improve and learn from. As such after the school holiday break I will be looking to host the second coaches and team managers review meeting so we can seek input from 2 of the hardest working volunteers we have in our club. In addition it will be the perfect time to begin to see who wishes to continue to coach in 2011. It is one of the aims of the committee to again have as many coaches and

1 st Captain Batts encouraged the boys for an upset Quarter against the top side. We were going to miss Papas (arm) and Xander and Goller (ill) so we had our work cut out for us. ‘Beaui’ started with a slight breeze advantage but Liam, Elam and Robbie were tough and strong across our back line. Ben Ahearn’s ability to grab it in the last line of defence and steer us out of trouble was awesome. Fantastic spoils were given by Batts, Crowey and Cuddles which really stopped them in their tracks. Strong play around the ground from Chalker, Jacko, Gauch and Jamo kept us in it. U9 Red’s 2.5.17 defeated by St Pauls 6.8.44

After a magnificent victory last weekend, the Mighty Reds fronted up for a big match against the undefeated St Pauls on the wide open spaces of McKinnon Reserve. Although we went down by 27 points, this was due to our 2nd quarter when our opponents managed to score four goals to nil with the aid of a very strong breeze.

First quarter Reds 0 Goals 1 Behind 1 St Pauls 0 Goals 2 Behinds 2 Captain Eddie started the game brilliantly, with multiple centre clearances and hard running down the wing. Kya almost demolished three St Pauls players by running straight through them, whilst Jack Cameron was magnificent laying bumps left right and centre. It was clear the boys learnt well from their focussed training on Friday night (which 23 of the 24 players attended!!!) and carried this intensity through to the game. With a solid bump to the head, the Mighty Wange was taken from the field against his will providing Lachie with the opportunity to run like the wind with his fresh legs. Fortunately Wange recovered and was ready to return to the field to commence the 2nd quarter.

Second quarter Reds 0 Goals 1 Behind 1 St Pauls 4 Goals 6 Behinds 30 Unfortunately the second quarter was our downfall for this match. Whilst Georgo was working his butt off in the centre, our forwards were unable to get on the end of his nice ruck work. This allowed St Pauls to clear repeatedly, resulting in four successive goals and all our hard work in the first quarter coming unstuck. This placed enormous pressure on our backline and they were simply too loose to repel their more determined opponents. Along with Georgo, Harry was the only other player that could hold his head high at the end of the quarter for his hard efforts around the ground.

Third quarter Reds 2 Goals 5 Behinds 17 St Pauls 5 Goals 6 Behinds 36 After a rousing three quarter time address, the boys returned to the ground to start the second half showing some real grit and determination. Instead of giving up, the boys piled on the pressure with terrific goals scored by Stoney and Jesse along with a further four behinds – all that could easily have been goals! Stoney and Jesse were bumping and crashing their opponents throughout the 3rd quarter although it is fair to say the entire team had lifted. Harry cleared the ball from our forward line, Slav was dangerous at Centre Half Forward but only managed two behinds. Oscar ran through the centre like a fit Daniel Kerr and Ollie dived almost 30 metres to prevent St Pauls from beating him to the ball. Mitch beat 3 opponents in a contest, although clearly the play of the day was Screamer attacking the ball at full speed and weaving through three players to save a certain goal. With dad Greg tearing up with pride and the rest of the playing group (and coaches) in awe! This feat in itself earned Screamer the yellow jersey for such bravery, skill and polish! Well done super star! Nick Polous chased the ball, bounced neatly and kicked perfectly – twice! What a star!

Fourth quarter Reds 2 Goals 5 Behinds 17 St Pauls 6 Goals 8 Behind 44 Our backline were awesome in the last quarter not letting St Pauls get any easy touches. Jimmy Slav continued his great running and kicking, whilst Jack Cameron won the ball, bounced, kicked long, followed up his miss-kick and bumped his opponent only to win the ball again – it was awesome to watch! Juz bumped hard and controlled all around him and along with Captain Eddie lead by example.

The team were keen to make amends and the coach urged U12 East Malvern Red vs St Kilda Red the boys to “get to the ball first” and to deploy the “long kicks” strategy. From the first bounce Allen and Halse East Malvern Knights lost to St Kilda Red combined to get the boys into the square. 4th Quarter A much improved performance with some healthy signs from many across the ground. With the coach again reminding the boys that “whoever wants the ball more wins the footy” the boys steeled 1st Quarter: themselves against a tough breeze. Again magnificent centre clearances from Allen allowed Anderson and Halse The coach asked for 3 things: a) First to the ball; b) Create to combine with Ollie McNabb who joined in the ruck. 2nd quarter St Kida Red: 8 8 56 Malvern 4 5 29 With the coach urging for an increase in the contested possessions (especially against a stiffening breeze) Anderson’s workload went through the roof. His tackling; second efforts and linking work kept the opposition at bay for the first half. A particularly good string of moves resulted in Sam Anderson touching the ball 4 – 5 times before being unlucky with a point reward only. Despite this, some excellent defensive efforts from James Cowie and Alex Lowe failed to stop a flood of one points and 3 quick goals from the Saints.

No doubt, Dico, Andy, Jack, Hayes and Lammy will have a considerable role to play here.

Our backs yesterday in the form of Quinlan,Paino, Garth, Chinny, Zac, Jordy, Kerin and Dom were magnificent- the St Bedes team is used to kicking cricket scores but not yesterday.

Jonno, Quinny, Sully and Jordy were very strong in the ruck. We know if we can get the ball in quickly to Barry, Jonno D, Quinny, Heggen, they will kick plenty of goals.

It was great to see the markologist Harry Smith back on song, and we hope that his hand is all right.

Next week we play at St Peter's with the sole intent of U16 Gold 10.5.65 lost to St Bedes reversing the round one result.

10.12.72 Don't study too hard for your mid year exams,

Well done for your efforts yesterday. Matt was thrilled Best: Dayne, Jules, Dom, Quinn, Sully, Paine, Zac, Jonno with your commitment and you should be all proud for the McKay, Luke and Sid way you went about the game. Goals: Barry 2, Smith 2, Quinn, Sullivan, McKay, Kerin, Kanakis, Hocking. I was impressed with your discipline in the face of several late tackles and some bewildering decisions. We were playing on a very small ground with patchy grass, an unpredictable bounce, and a wind that favoured the northern end.

Our attack on the footy in the first half surprised the St Bedes players, many of whom have the luxury of not playing on Saturdays. This advantage will be lost once the APS season concludes, and we will have fresh legs for the finals that we will reach.

Matt was extremely pleased with the boys who played in new roles and adjusted with poise and concentration. Boys, don't ever forget how Hampton lost the grand final last year.

If our focus is for the footy, the team, and not the opposition or the decision makers, the results will look after themselves.

We were ably led by Dayne and Sully yesterday, whose collective courage and leadership was inspirational.

Jules keeps getting kicks and driving the ball forward- we need to protect the ball carriers like Jules, Billy, Sid, Quinny,TJ, Max,Rauri, Ed, Heggen and Jonno. EAST MALVERN JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB

From half-time we were down to 16 men after Jack Anderson injured his calf and Taylor Quirk was unable to run due to knee problems. But the boys kept fighting it out with Harry Bennetts doing well when put on the ball in the last quarter. Josh Abbey was another Blue who could hold his head high, particularly after a brilliant second quarter. Alex Stefanac didn’t have his best game in what has been a very good year but still kept working and putting his head over the ball. It started in the middle where Lachlan Berry produced his best quarter for the season and the Bevan twins, Luke and Mitchell, continued the form that could easily see them playing well in Division 1. Up forward Tom Nelson provided a lively target across half forward with Taylor Quirk doing the same at full forward. Lachy Christie was typically clever, and brave, across half forward, Jack Anderson clean and precise on a wing, Luca Skoufos dangerous near goals.

When the ball did cross our half way mark there was a running defence ready to meet it led by Ben Wilson, who played well all day, Robert Pugliese, Alistair Shannon and Ollie Doswell. In the last line Andy Cowan was back to his best, leaving his opponent when the time was right in his best game of the year. And once Andy finds his form he keeps playing well.

We knew Waverley would hit back and they did after quarter time when their bigger bodies started to come into play. At three quarter time we were still in the game being just seven points down but the Hawks added six goals with the wind in the last quarter to make the final margin 44 points.
