Ritgerð til B.A.-prófs Arnar Ásmundsson Kt.: 230476-4389 Leiðbeinandi: Ingibjörg Ágústsdóttir Maí 2011 Abstract In 1995 Nick Hornby published his first novel, High Fidelity, a story about obsession, love and the complications of modern life. Hornby published Juliet, Naked in 2009, where he tackles similar topics to those in High Fidelity. A key difference between these novels is the presence of the Internet in Juliet, Naked, which is not featured in High Fidelity. A comparison of Juliet, Naked and High Fidelity offers an interesting insight into Hornby‟s vision of life before and after the spread of the Internet, and how it has affected the characters‟ obsessions, communication and their lives in general. This essay is, however, not limited to the changes the Internet has brought, as other topics are discussed in the essay‟s several chapters. The first chapter is a general introduction and is followed by a chapter containing background information on both Hornby and the novels, as well as illustrating how these novels were received by critics. The third chapter tackles a dominant theme in both books, obsession, especially male obsession with popular culture. The ensuing chapter deals with love and its complications, and how it is presented in both novels. The fifth chapter focuses on the Internet and the benefits and limitations it brings to modern life. -

To reach those necessary goals, we strategically use an array of interconnected channels and platforms to transform not only the media landscape but also a cul- ture in which women’s and girls’ voices, stories, experiences, and images are nei- ther suffciently amplifed nor placed on par with the voices, stories, experiences, and images of men and boys. Five years later, a film with the same title was released world-wide. The film is an adaptation of the novel. I have decided to inspect what changes were made to the original story when it was adapted for the film. There were many changes made that are obvious to those who have both read the story and seen the film, such as the relocation of the setting from London to Chicago. But I found changes such as this one to be merely superficial changes. The changes I wanted to inspect were the ones made to the characters, theme and atmosphere. I found the theory of novel-to-film adaptation is relatively young in many respects. The adaptation process itself is perhaps as old as the cinema itself but the theoretical discussion of the process is by no means as extensive as it perhaps should be, considering how many novels and other literary works have been adapted for films. Critics have many times criticized film adaptations for not being as good as the original work. I found that his criticism can be unfair, as many adapted films are not trying to reproduce the original work but to reinvent it for a new format. This is the approach I wanted to make when inspecting the film adaptation of High Fidelity . -

Sword Song as her “Swan Song”: A Fitting Culmination of the Rosemary Sutcliff Legacy? Barbara Carman Garner Carleton University, Ottawa The novel that Rosemary Sutcliff was revising when she died suddenly on July 23, 1992 at the age of 72 was to have been called The Sword Song of Bjarni Sigurdson. 1 Sutcliff had seen the manuscript through two-thirds of the second draft of her traditional three -draft writing process before making a fair copy (Meek 62 qtd. in Garside-Neville). Sutcliff’s cousin and godson, Anthony Lawton, transcribed the draft, and Sutcliff’s long-time editor, Jill Black, did the final editing of Lawton’s transcription. Sword Song was published in 1997. Early reviews of the novel were mixed. Sandra Johnson’s review in The (London) Times considered the opening a “stunner,” explaining that “a 16- year old boy is exiled from his settlement.” She continued, “Regrettably, the story quavers thereafter, meandering around the coast of Britain as young Bjarni sells his fighting skills to one fiery-beardy after another, but the dense historical detail and rich colours are all still there” (n. pag.). Compare this assessment with The Horn Book reviewer’s high praise for the novel: “Sutcliff’s careful handling of how a young man, influenced by hero-worship and the force of custom, deals with the difficult choices that lead to maturity is nothing short of masterly. An unexpected and most welcome gift”(n.pag.). 1 Today I aim to convince you of the validity of yet another reviewer’s comment, that “Sword Song is a fitting capstone to Sutcliff’s marvelous career as one of Britain’s premier authors of Historical fiction” (jacket hard cover edition). -

The third and fourth waves of feminism, which were both focused on diversity and individualism and have brought about many changes, have led to various debates about what it means to be a real man. In the current era of MeToo, the Men’s rights movement and the popularity of ‘strongman leaders’ such as Jair Bolsonaro, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, the topic of masculinity is more relevant than ever. Opinions about who is and who is not a real man vary enormously. Some people support the traditional ideal of a man who is the breadwinner of the family, always stays strong and firmly distances himself from any behaviour or interests that are generally considered feminine. Others claim that a real man is a man who can openly display his emotions, admit his vulnerabilities and does not worry about the distinction between masculine and feminine behaviour. The subject of masculinity also plays an important role in the fiction of British author Nick Hornby.
