    WO RLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION Global Task Force on Cholera Control CHOLERA COUNTRY PROFILE: KENYA Last update: 29 April 2010 General Country Information: The Republic of Kenya is located in eastern Africa, and borders Ethiopia, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda and Sudan with an east coast along the Indian Ocean. Kenya is divided into eight provinces: Central, Coast, Eastern, North Eastern, Nyanza, Rift Valley and Western and Nairobi. The provinces are further subdivided into 69 districts. Nairobi, the capital, is the largest city of Kenya. In 1885, Kenya was made a German protectorate over the Sultan of Zanzibar and coastal areas were progressively taken over by British establishments especially in the costal areas. Hostilities between German military forces and British troops (supported by Indian Army troops) were to end in 1918 as the Armistice of the first World War was signed. Kenya gained its independence from Great Britain in December 1963 when a government was formed by Jomo Kenyatta head of the KANU party (Kenya National African Union). Kenya's economy is highly dependant on tourism and Nairobi is the primary communication and financial hub of East Africa. It enjoys the region's best transportation linkages, communications infrastructure, and trained personnel. Many foreign firms maintain regional branches or representative offices in the city. Since December 2007, following the national elections, Kenya has been affected by political turmoil and violent rampages in several parts of the country leading to economic and humanitarian crisis. Kenya's Human Development Index is 147 over 182. The major cause of mortality and morbidity is malaria. Malnutrition rates are high (around 50'000 malnourished children and women in 27 affected districts in 2006).

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The present study investigated the influence of school environmental characteristics on retention of secondary schoolteachers in Homa Bay County of Kenya.The study adopted an ex-post facto research design.For a population of one thousand eight hundred and one (1801) teachers, according to Krejcie and Morgan (1970) table of specification, three hundred and twenty (320) teachers were recommended to be appropriate and for a population of 295 principals, one hundred and sixty-nine (169) were appropriate.This study used questionnaires as the instrument of data collection. Two sets of questionnaires were used; one for the school principals and another for the teachers.To enhance validity of the instrument, a pilot study was conducted in twenty selected schools in the neighboring Migori County. This involved the ten principals and two teachers from each school.In this study, internal consistency reliability of the instruments was obtained by computing Cronbach’s alpha (α) using SPSS and a Cronbach’s Alpha of α= .705 was reported.Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used in data analysis.

    www.ijcrt.org © 2020 IJCRT | Volume 8, Issue 3 March 2020 | ISSN: 2320-2882 Work Community Interactions as Determinant of Teacher Transfer Intention: A case of Public Secondary Schools in Suba and Mbita Sub-counties, Kenya Author: Jane Irene Dawo, Department of Education Foundations and Management, Maseno University, Kenya ABSTRACT Teacher transfer intention, precursor to any formal expression of teacher transfer requests, if actualized, destabilizes staffing. In USA, between 2001 and 2010, teacher transfer requests was at an annual average of 13%, in Lesotho it was at 19%, while in Kenya it was 3.1%.These requests were high with those still pending in Mbita and Suba public secondary schools at an annual average of 25.4% and 22% respectively above Homabay County average at 11.1% for the period 2009 to 2014. The fact that an average of 30.9% of annual requests were to schools within these sub- counties with similarly difficult socio-geographical characteristics, over the national rating of 9.4%, implies that transfer intention could be associated with work-place conditions unique to schools. In this respect, literature reveals that a positive human environment may override geographical hardships. A baseline survey in 2015 revealed that 252(89.6%) teachers had transfer intention, 73(28.9%) preferring other schools within these sub-counties. The purpose of this study was to determine relationship between school work community interactions and teacher transfer intention in public secondary schools in Mbita and Suba sub-counties. The study was based Job Demand-Resources model(Bakker & Demerouti, 2006). The study employed descriptive survey and correlational research designs.
