THE HONORABLE SONIA SOTOMAYOR SHARES HER INSPIRATIONAL STORY AT THE NATIONAL CONSTITUTION CENTER

Philadelphia, PA (February 15, 2013) – Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor will join the National Constitution Center on Friday, March 1, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. for an uplifting and deeply personal reflection on her remarkable life, from a Bronx housing project to the federal bench. Justice Sotomayor’s appearance at the Center is in connection with her New York Times bestselling memoir My Beloved World. The conversation will be moderated by Dr. Amy Gutmann, president of the University of Pennsylvania and a Trustee of the Center. The program is co-presented with the Greater Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and is a part of the Center’s Women’s History Month and 10th Anniversary celebrations. A story of hard work, unwavering vision, and perseverance amidst many obstacles, My Beloved World recounts Sotomayor’s journey from a precarious childhood in to Princeton, Yale Law School, the New York County District Attorney’s office, and the Federal District Court, all before the age of 40 – followed by her appointment to the Supreme Court. My Beloved World pays tribute to Sotomayor’s invaluable mentors and touches on her failed marriage, her life as a diabetic, and the modern version of extended family she has created with cherished friends and their children.

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor graduated summa cum laude from in 1976 and from Yale Law School in 1979. She worked as an assistant district attorney in New York and then at the law firm of Pavia & Harcourt. From 1992 to 1998, she

ADD ONE/SONIA SOTOMAYOR served as a judge of the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, and from 1998 to 2009 on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. In May 2009, President nominated her as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court; she assumed this role on August 8, 2009, becoming the first Hispanic and third woman appointed to the highest court in the United States.

Justice Sotomayor’s program is one of many great programs taking place at the Center throughout the late winter and early spring. Previous programs included Vice President Al Gore and California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor will appear before a sold-out audience at the Center on Friday, March 15, 2013.
