Dear TSCA Members:

This is a working draft of the program. Information that is in red was not provided to me in the original submission. Interest groups chairs, please send this missing information to me. Any changes submitted, of any nature, need to reference the following information:

Page #; Panel #, day, and time slot if applicable; Committee name if applicable; Interest group name if applicable.

This will allow me to find the error, change or omission more easily. Please submit change requests in PUBLISHER . Having to convert from WORD complicates the formatting.

All changes must be submitted to me by Friday, September 11, 2009.

Additional panels may be added later this week if the hotel can make the breakout rooms available. You all submitted more panels than the roll over room number from Corpus would accommodate.

Thank you for your patience and impatience. Both have been needed, on my part, to get this posted.

Sincerely,

Ralph Long

TEXAS SPEECH COMMUNICATION ASSOCIATION 2009 CONVENTION Beyond Words: Nonverbal Communications A Second Language From the President….. NOTES: Dear TSCA Members,

As I prepared to write this letter, I decided to look back at the TSCA convention themes since the turn of the century. Although that phrase conjured up more distant times, it is the year 2000 to which I refer, already eight years ago! As we entered the new millen- nium, we reviewed our past with our 75 th Anniversary theme of “An Affair to Remem- ber”. The year 2001 led us to examine the future of our profession as a “Speech Odys- sey”. Since then, we have examined our Political Agenda ‘02, Re-Igniting our Fire Within ’03, Service Learning ’04, Accountability ’05, Incivility ’06 and Listening in ‘07.

This year’s theme, Media Morphology, examines the impact of the medium by which those messages are conveyed. As McLuhan states, it is the “medium that shapes and controls the scale and form of human association and action.” Consequently, as Commu- nication Professionals, it is incumbent upon us to examine that medium.

Vice President Lois Davis, has solicited and organized panels from your colleagues to create this program and provide you with three days of intellectually stimulating and en- gaging topics. Panels include such topics as the digital immigrant, teaching the millen- nial generation, job hunting in the technological marketplace, trends in coaching foren- sics and everyone’s favorite, the “GIFTS” session. You will not leave disappointed!

Additionally, I encourage you to network with your colleagues and think about your con- tribution to TSCA. It is only because of dedicated educators, such as yourself, that we can address the challenges of our discipline and the changes that we will encounter in this century. Changes in delivery methods, the value of communication courses in the curriculum and the push in legislature to reduce credit hours, present unique challenges

FROM PRESIDENTTHE for us as a group. It is only through organizations such as TSCA that our voices can be heard collectively. Consequently, I challenge each of you to become even more involved in TSCA. If you have not spoken to an officer or other TSCA member about how to be- come involved, I invite you to speak with me today about the opportunities to serve TSCA. We currently have one of the largest state communication organizations and that is only possible through your continued involvement.

I would like to personally thank all of the Executive Officers, Interest Group Chairs, Committee Chairs and District Chairs who dedicated their time and energy to TSCA over the past year. It has been a pleasure serving with you and an honor to represent TSCA.

Welcome to Corpus Christi and the 2008 TSCA Convention! Enjoy!

Sincerely,

Barbara J. Mayo, President TSCA 2007-2008

4 TEXAS SPEECH COMMUNICATION ASSOCIATION 2009 CONVENTION Beyond Words: Nonverbal Communications A Second Language A note from Local Arrangements: Charlene Dietrich NOTES:

Welcome to Corpus Christi

On behalf of the local arrangement committee, I would like to welcome you to Corpus Christi, The City By the Sea . Because the Omni is lo- LOCAL FROM ARRANGEMENTS cated downtown, there are a lot of activities to do downtown and you can reach most of them by walking. You can walk across the street and ride covered bicycles (it takes at least two people), go swimming, build a sandcastle on the beach, and watch the sun set while drinking cham- pagne (or water) and eating strawberries. If you’re looking for that ole’ 1950’s feeling, check out the City Diner & Oyster Bar . If you are more the “Café” type, we have the Café Passionne. Great seafood, pasta and steaks are at the Water Street Restaurant . After you eat there, check out the club that’s next door. Go shopping at the specialty shops in the Wa- ter Street Square. The Executive Surf Club is designed for shorts, jeans, sandals and those liking music, beer and friends. Go across the Harbor Bridge to check out the World War Two aircraft carrier, the Lexington (wear your walking shoes). At the bottom of the Lexington Pier are res- taurants and gift shops (plus more sand for those sandcastles!) such as Pier 99 or Blackbeard’ s for music, great conversations with your new TSCA buddies. Don’t forget we have the Texas State Aquarium, art mu- seums plus Harbor Playhouse for added enjoyment. If you just want to “sit”, there is a really long seawall for just that purpose (well that and defending the city against “hurricane force water” spills!).

Let us know how we can help make your TSCA experience in Corpus Christi more beneficial. We can direct you to shopping malls, fishing ex- periences and trips around the bay on a boat or find a quiet place to take a well deserved nap.

Enjoy your stay, learn a lot, eat your veggies, take more naps, have won- derful conversations, laugh with your friends and take care.

Charlene Dietrich

TEXAS SPEECH COMMUNICATION ASSOCIATION 2009 CONVENTION Beyond Words: Nonverbal Communications A Second Language TSCA Conference 2010 Call for Papers and Panels NOTES: Cultural Communication: Creating Chaos or Community?

October 6-9, 2010

“To acquire knowledge one must study: but to acquire wisdom, one must observe .” Marilyn vos Savant

In other words, what one observes about another establishes perception and knowledge of whom that person really is, supporting the notion that one’s nonverbal behavior is an important factor in understanding human beings. The nonverbal channels seem to be more powerful than what peo-

ple say. This becomes even more apparent as our world becomes more culturally diverse. To understand the differences in languages, family background, and life experiences of people we encounter, we must go beyond just the words that are uttered, but observe the nonverbal language of behaviors.

I find it fascinating to watch people! I love looking at their eyes and faces or what they do with their hands or how they maneuver their bodies. My observations of their nonverbal behaviors enables me to learn a great deal about an individual before we share verbal communication. My observations can also give me a “heads up” in knowing how to deal with an individual.

Certainly my way comes under scrutiny, but I do believe that nonverbal communication is a strong method of the communication process that offers my ideas and thoughts. With that being my goal, I offer a few suggestions about my theme to the members of TSCA to help you to create programs that will:

• Explore the different aspects (examples) of nonverbal communication and what they mean. • Discuss the importance of nonverbal communication in a cross-cultural environment. • Investigate female and male nonverbal communication differences and similarities • Examine how gender and physical appearance affect behavior from others • Address how nonverbal communication is as significant as verbal communication optimal success in the workplace • Illustrate how nonverbal communication could be classified as a another language

FOR PAPERS AND PANELS FOR PAPERS • Offer interpretations of nonverbal cues and behaviors from culture to culture

With nonverbal communication being a broad topic of interest, I challenge the members of TSCA to go beyond these suggestions, but to expose us to unique areas of nonverbal communication that will broaden our intellect and peak our interest to greater heights!

CALL Join us in Houston for the 2010 Convention. Share your research and ideas. Interest Group members submit your panels to your Interest Group Chairs
