Zitarelli ∗ Temple University, Philadelphia, PA 19122, USA Abstract This paper weaves two interlocking histories together. One strand of the fabric traces the development of the American mathe- matician Joseph B. Reynolds from a peripheral player to an active contributor to mathematics, astronomy, and engineering and to the founding of a sectional association of mathematicians. The other piece describes the evolution of his institution, Lehigh Uni- versity, from its founding in 1865 to a full-fledged research department that began producing doctorates in 1939. Both Reynolds and Lehigh straddled the line between the pre- and post-Chicago eras in American mathematics. © 2006 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The student-athletes, coaches, professional staff, graduate assistants, volunteers, and alumni and community partners are the kind of people that inspire the commitment required to achieve success despite increasingly competitive circumstances. You will read about some of these people in the pages that follow, however please know that there are many more that make up our Lehigh Athletics family. Collectively, I believe we have established the kind of environment where achieving at very high levels is expected. Those of you who have invested in us have done so with the expectation that our educational efforts will produce distinctive results. Your trust inspires us to be uncompromising on quality and to push ourselves and our student-athletes to fulfill ambitions that some might describe as unrealistic. Athletically, we want our teams and individual student-athletes to win, to win championships, and to compete against programs that challenge us to stretch and grow. Yet, we also expect our student- athletes to achieve in the classroom and to lead by example among their campus peers as well as through their commitments to serving others who may be less fortunate.

NEWSLETTER OF THE LEHIGH VALLEY SECTION FEBRUARY 2021 OF THE AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY VOL. 104, NO. 2 THE OCTAGON Лехигх Жаллеъ АЦС Фебруаръ Вебинар анд Жиртуал Сецтион Меетинг (Lehigh Valley ACS February Webinar and Virtual Section Meeting) "A hatred that still haunts undergraduate organic chemistry 150 years later." David Lewis, Univ. of Wisconsin/Eau Claire Thursday, February 18th / 7:00 pm Zoom Link: http://bit.ly/2XZS9H0 CONTACT: Roger Egolf [[email protected]] Every student of organic chemistry for the last four decades, at least, has learned two empirical rules: Markovnikov's Rule for electrophilic addition to alkenes, and Zaitsev's Rule for base elimination of alkyl halides. Although few remember the rules themselves, Markovnikov's name appears to be one that is not forgotten easily. What fewer people know is that both these chemists were contemporaries (Markovnikov was 3 years older) at Kazan Imperial University. By the 1860s, when both were undergraduate students, Kazan had become the pre-eminent chemistry school in Russia thanks to discoveries by Zinin (reduction of nitrobenzene) and Klaus (ruthenium; pure osmium tetroxide). Both studied under Aleksandr Mikhailovich Butlerov, the successor of both these chemists, who had inherited the mantle of Archibald Scott Couper and developed Couper's original version of the Structural Theory of Organic Chemistry into a version so useful and workable that it quickly became part of the conventional wisdom—nobody bothered to refer to Butlerov's original work. The other thing about Markovnikov and Zaitsev is that they hated each other, carrying on a life-long feud that I contend led, in part, to Zaitsev's Rule.

  • Lehigh University (PA)
2012-13 Edition First Impressions: Lehigh University (PA) Educated Quest.com Background 1 Introduction to Lehigh Founded in 1865 after the close of the Civil War, Lehigh Univer- Background sity opened with a $500,000 donation from Asa Packer, the President of the Lehigh Valley Railroad. According to Lehigh’s official history, Packer’s donation was the largest single contribu- tion to an American college up to that time. In 1871 Lehigh made the decision to be tuition free and kept that commitment for two decades. Lehigh was organized into its three under- graduate divisions: the College of Arts and Science; the College of Business Administration; and the College of Engineering in 1918 and has held to this structure ever since. These under- graduate divisions became co-ed starting in 1971. With around 5,000 undergraduates, Lehigh is a smaller school than most comprehensive national research universities. Be- cause of its academic depth in the liberal arts, business and sci- ence, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) sub- jects, Lehigh is cross-shopped against larger public and private universities such as Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, Penn State and Villanova as well as smaller technically-focused schools such as Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Stevens Institute of Technology. It is also cross-shopped against Patriot League sports rivals Bucknell and Lafayette, which are smaller liberal arts colleges that also offer engineering. Case Western Re- serve is probably the most similar school to Lehigh in terms of academic programs and its organization around colleges of lib- 2 eral arts, business and engineering, although it has about 1,000 rate was 76 percent for the class that entered in 2008, though fewer undergraduates.
