By the Numbers Volume 16, Number 4 The Newsletter of the SABR Statistical Analysis Committee November, 2006 Review Academic Research: Errors and Official Scorers Charlie Pavitt The author describes a recent academic study investigating the change in error rates over time, and speculating on the role of the official scorer in the “home field advantage” for errors. This is one of a series of reviews of sabermetric articles published in academic journals. It is part of a project of mine to collect and catalog sabermetric research, and I would appreciate learning of and receiving copies of any studies of which I am unaware. Kalist and Spurr’s effort is a welcome change.

The studies demonstrate the schools' ability to improve academic achievement and behavior in safe, nurturing, and stimulating environments. The researchers say the case study analysis reveals that on average, smaller schools can provide a safer and more challenging school environment that creates higher academic achievement and graduation rates, fewer disciplinary problems, and greater satisfaction from families, students, and teachers. Also, schools that share facilities with other organizations offer broader learning opportunities for students, provide higher quality services to students and their families, and present a way to efficiently use tax dollars.
