After being exhibited in the space of Estella Katzenellenbogen and her studies at the First Faculty of Fine Arts in the United States, Zuka, an extremely talented representative of the new American post-war art scene, became close friend with Joan Mitchell, among others. She decided to go to France at the end of the 1940s, to ‘gain culture’ and study at the Académie de la Grande-Chaumière, in Paris. Zuka continue working on oil painting and collage by turns, without claiming any art lineage but Braque, Picasso and Matisse. She is in the wake of their techniques and, perhaps, insuring their posterity. With daring colors, decorative exuberance, expressiveness of characters, she displays her originality and fantasy in the series of Amerindian collages, portraits of the French Revolution, of cows, birds, strawberries, etc. Her animals are humanized, but almost with an animistic approach. She draws with scissors with no prep work, like Matisse at the end of his life. Reminiscent of Fauvism, through her use of glaring colors and simplified shapes, her paintings are above all full of life, movement and joy. She had her first solo show at Darthea Speyer’s in Paris in 1970.

  • 1912 : Edouard Henry-Baudot 2012 : Zuka
