01503 263206 NEWS FROM THE EAST LOOE TOWN TRUST

COUNCIL OFFICES ROOF Work will be completed shortly on replacing the flat roof over the Council Offices and Tourist Information Centre. It has been patched over many years, but after further deterioration nothing short of a new one would now be sufficient. It will cost the Trust about £15,000, which again illustrates the importance to the Trust of maintaining income streams to permit the maintenance of the various properties for which we are responsible as well as the beach, seafront and Wooldown.

WISHING WELL SITE When the Council closed the former ladies’ toilets by the Guildhall, and replaced them with new ones around the corner, the property reverted to the Trust. As previously reported, after public consultation we obtained the necessary planning consents to convert the building into a cafe/restaurant. A public tendering process identified a preferred bidder and work is in hand to complete a lease. Building work to create the shell (on the same scale as before) should commence in a matter of weeks; the aim being to permit opening by about September. This will represent a substantial investment by the Trust but we are satisfied on the professional advice which we have received throughout the exercise that the rental return on it will help to provide significantly improved long term financial security for the Trust.

GRAFFITI As in other parts of the town, attention seekers have caused criminal damage by spraying graffiti on the seafront. Our staff are to be congratulated by acting quickly to remove it. A significant cost is involved because the process can take a long time and the materials required are expensive. A good deal of cooperative effort is being made to address the issue and if readers have any knowledge that they can contribute please be in touch with our office in the Guildhall or the Town Council.

The sailing season is in full flow on both Saturday afternoons and Thursday evenings with regularly more than 30 boats on the start line. Only one race has been lost to date to the weather, although race days with a good sailing breeze have been at a premium.

Up to the end of April, class leaders were Mirrors – Joe Jackman and Jack Sargent, Redwing – Kinver and Joe Palfrey, Enterprise – Matt and Ivan Jaycock and Laser – David Jackman.

The biggest fleet is the single-handed Laser fleet, with 16 registered boats, who will be holding an Open Meeting on Saturday 27th May. Hopefully plenty of visiting boats will arrive to test the prowess of the home fleet.

Plans are well underway for the GP14 National Championships in August when about 70 visitors are due to grace the waters of Looe Bay.

Members of the club will also be travelling to the World and National Mirror Championships being held at Resronget on the Fal Estuary and the Redwing National Championships in North Devon.

The Club AGM saw a new face at the helm, with Enys Dan taking over from Rob Dewe as Commodore. We wish him well for his term in office.

THE MONKEY SANCTUARY

Support a local charity and visit Wild Futures’ Monkey Sanctuary; offering a safe haven for monkeys since 1964. Wild Futures’ Monkey Sanctuary cares for a range of different species of rescued monkeys, giving visitors an intimate insight to a working sanctuary and a chance to meet some of its amazing monkey residents and wildlife inhabitants.

There’s a lot to do for the whole family who can take a tour of the monkey enclosures and learn about these fascinating animals from the team of expert carers. It’s not just monkeys though! Kids will love the wild play area where they can learn about the environment around them and let off some steam in the playground. Take a gentle stroll around the beautiful Wildlife Gardens and check out the sea view or enjoy a delicious lunch at the Treetop Café.

On 23rd July we will be holding an Animal Welfare Day. Join us and take part in lots of fun animal welfare themed activities. There will be information stands from other animal welfare groups and don’t forget the animal face painting.

TOURISM AND AMENITIES COMMITTEE 2016/17

It has been a busy year for the Committee and I would like to thank those councillors and members of staff that have helped on the Committee.

The following summarises some of the work the Committee has been undertaking:

Tourism: The need for the TIC to modernise and also to become self-funding has dominated the Committee once again this year. Unfortunately, despite the makeover last year, new stock lines and the launch of the new website, the TIC failed to start becoming self-funding. This led to the difficult decision to make the post of TIC manager redundant. A working group has been set up with a mixture of councillors, staff, members of the public and businesses, to look at the future of the TIC and how it can be run more efficiently and adapt to the change.

Traffic Regulation Order: We consulted on potential changes to on street parking restrictions and the proposals for the new schemes were drawn up and passed to Cornwall Council for comment and pricing. Unfortunately what came back from Cornwall Council surprised us, as the total cost would be in the region of £68,000. We consulted the town again in light of the costs with the result being the TRO was no longer supported.

Devolution: Cornwall Council continues to consult on potential devolution, which includes services and assets such as land and buildings. We have expressed an interest in a number of sites and were awarded a grant from Cornwall Council to undertake surveys to ascertain potential liabilities etc. Work continues with Cornwall Council on the future of the library and the potential for LTC to take it over. This work is very important as this potentially puts us in a strong position to influence or control important assets for the town.

Emergency: Work on the Emergency Plan, which is designed to assist in the event of an incident/emergency affecting the town has now been completed.

Bathing Water Quality: Work continues with all the agencies to further understand the issues and to improve the water quality. This is a multi-agency approach that is well supported. Current initiatives include camera survey of sewers and encouraging businesses to install grease traps to prevent grease entering the sewers, which causes blockages and potential sewer spills. The Yellow Fish campaign is also underway to educate businesses not to pour waste water down street gullies. The public information campaign to encourage people not to put anything but the 3 P’s down the toilet continues. Further work on catchment management with local farms is also continuing. The good news is that the bathing water passed the sufficient standard in 2016.

CCTV: Our successful CCTV system has been upgraded with a number of new cameras. Under the scheme, 1% of cardholder spend on Co-op products will be given to up to three local organisations. Co-op members choose which project to support and in the absence of a choice, members’ contributions will be split across the nominated projects. All you have to do is log on: https://membership.coop.co.uk/sign-in and choose! The Co-op have accepted three projects for the next round which started in April and runs through to September: the Old Guildhall Museum (East Looe Town Trust), Looe Town Football Club and Looe Skatepark (Looe Development Trust). Here is a brief summary of the three projects:

The Old Guildhall Museum: We want to buy a new computer, printer and display screen to show photos and films in the Museum and would also like new genealogy software to provide guided searches for those with Looe ancestry. These tools will help us with the interpretation of our displays and research work.

Looe Town Football Club: We currently have a changing room building which is in dire need of attention. The toilets are very old and not very nice for children to use. When away teams come to play especially we would love to offer them somewhere clean and modern to use.

Looe Development Trust: Skatepark: Repeated community surveys over the last 15 years have identified the need for a skate park for Looe and young people in the town have actively sought one. The Glebe Committee at St. Martin’s Church have made land available and sound tests have been completed. We have a proposed design which meets the Olympic standard – skateboarding becomes an official Olympic sport in 2020! – and we are now consulting with Cornwall Council and others. We will keep everyone updated through social media and Looe Community News.

Three Year 6 pupils decided to do their bit towards raising money for a new Skatepark. Liam Jerrom and his friends Fran Taylor and Anya Martin set about a bit of car washing. They raised a fabulous £55.35 and are thinking up other things they can do to raise money.

Well done and thank you to all of them from the Trustees of Looe Development Trust. CO-OP COMMUNITY FUND LOCAL BENEFICIARIES – IT’S YOUR CHOICE!

LOOE ROWING CLUB The new season is well and truly under way! Following Looe Rowing Club's impressive results in the Three Rivers Race it was on to The World Championships on the Isles of Scilly. With over 140 gigs competing and crews from America, Holland, Bermuda, Ireland and Wales the weekend had a truly international feel. Again a cracking turn out from Looe with five crews competing, two men’s and three ladies’, and by far the most supporters of any club! On the water, competition was fierce. Our Men’s A going head-to-head with Falmouth A in the final once again, with under a boat length in it, Falmouth just pipped us to the line. However, it is always advisable to contact the organiser(s) Atlantic Pub Sunday night for the club meal. We wish to thank everyone who came directly if confirmation and further details are required. and cheered us on and all back in Looe watching online and listening to the interesting and sometimes accurate radio commentary. Also a massive thank you to all the coaches, committee and helpers without whom such fantastic results could not be achieved. The Club is now set for the rest of the summer and plenty of regattas. Our own club regatta will be organised from East Looe beach Saturday May 27th, and we will also be having a Nearly New sale by the Guildhall in the middle of town the next day, Sunday 28th, to help raise funds to buy a new boat. So you couldn’t pick a better weekend to come and visit Looe. See you there! P h o t b y e r K i n g
