FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Sarah Hahne PRESS CREDENTIALS AVAILABLE San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino (909) 475-1800 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Sarah Hahne PRESS CREDENTIALS AVAILABLE San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino (909) 475-1800 x4222 [email protected] ADAM “LAKERS” CAROLLA GETS CRANKY AT SAN MANUEL CASINO For $15 and $20, Inland Empire Enjoys Night with Former Loveline Host San Manuel Indian Nation, Calif. – June 10, 2011 – Thursday, July 7, 2011, funnyman and recent New York Times best-selling author, Adam Carolla will make the Inland Empire laugh out loud with his interactive comedy show at San Manuel Casino. Tickets are on sale today and available at Ticketmaster.com and the San Manuel Box Office for $15 and $20. Born without a middle name, Adam Carolla, as a joke, wrote “Adam Lakers Carolla” on his driver’s license application, where to this day his license states his middle name as Lakers. A funnyman from an early age, Carolla clearly had a knack for comedy. But his big break came when, after studying at the famous The Groundlings improv group, he met Dr. Drew, while working for KROQ’s “Kevin and Bean Morning Show” with pal Jimmy Kimmel. Liking what he saw, Dr. Drew hired Carolla as a co-host for Loveline on the radio in 1995. Becoming widely popular, “Loveline” took to television airing on MTV from 1996 to 2000. His television success grew when he and Jimmy Kimmel teamed up for Comedy Central’s “The Man Show” in 1999. From there, he created “Crank Yankers” also on Comedy Central and MTV, where he revived his most famous character, Mr. Birchum. Carolla’s resume is comprised of gigs in more radio and television shows, including a talk show called “Too Late with Adam Carolla”, a home remodeling program called “The Adam Carolla Project”, as well as a few pilot sitcoms in recent years. In 2009, Carolla produced a daily podcast at his personal website, where in 2011 he announced on ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” that it had taken the Guinness World Record for the most downloaded podcast ever from Ricky Gervais after receiving over 59 million unique downloads from March 2009 to March 2011. His success continues to develop with his New York Times bestselling book, “In Fifty Years We’ll All Be Chicks”. The book released in November 2010, showcases Carolla’s spot-on sense of humor and cements his status as a cultural commentator/comedian/complainer extraordinaire. Every Thursday night with headliner entertainment, San Manuel gives away $1,000 just for seeing the show. To be eligible to win, guests only need a ticket to the show, a Club Serrano card and to be 21 or older. Guests can enter beginning at noon on such days. Three drawings will be held on those nights: $250 at 7:20 p.m., $250 at 10:00 p.m. and $500 at 11:00 p.m. Winners must be present. Note: Doors open at 6:30. Must be 21 to enter Casino. Please gamble responsibly. About San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino: Celebrating 25 Years San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino is Southern California’s one-stop destination for entertainment and fun. February 26, 2021 Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer, Alabama are voting to form a union with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU). We are the writers of feature films and television series. All of our work is done under union contracts whether it appears on Amazon Prime, a different streaming service, or a television network. Unions protect workers with essential rights and benefits. Most importantly, a union gives employees a seat at the table to negotiate fair pay, scheduling and more workplace policies. Deadline Amazon accepts unions for entertainment workers, and we believe warehouse workers deserve the same respect in the workplace. We strongly urge all Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer to VOTE UNION YES. IRONIC FEMINISM: RHETORICAL CRITIQUE IN SATIRICAL NEWS A Dissertation Presented to the Graduate School of Clemson University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Rhetorics, Communication, and Information Design by Kathy Elrick December 2016 Accepted by Dr. David Blakesley, Committee Chair Dr. Jeff Love Dr. Brandon Turner Dr. Victor J. Vitanza ABSTRACT Ironic Feminism: Rhetorical Critique in Satirical News aims to offer another perspective and style toward feminist theories of public discourse through satire. This study develops a model of ironist feminism to approach limitations of hegemonic language for women and minorities in U.S. public discourse. The model is built upon irony as a mode of perspective, and as a function in language, to ferret out and address political norms in dominant language. In comedy and satire, irony subverts dominant language for a laugh; concepts of irony and its relation to comedy situate the study’s focus on rhetorical contributions in joke telling. How are jokes crafted? Who crafts them? What is the motivation behind crafting them? To expand upon these questions, the study analyzes examples of a select group of popular U.S.

  • Print Journalism's Framing of Female Candidates in The
Joining the World of Journals Welcome to the nation’s first and, to our knowledge, only undergraduate research journal in communi- cations. We discovered this fact while perusing the Web site of the Council on Undergraduate Research, which lists and links to the 60 or so undergraduate research journals nationwide (http://www.cur.org/ugjournal. html). Some of these journals focus on a discipline (e.g., Journal of Undergraduate Research in Physics), some are university-based and multidisciplinary (e.g., MIT Undergraduate Research Journal), and some are university-based and disciplinary (e.g., Furman University Electronic Journal in Undergraduate Mathematics). The Elon Journal is the first to focus on undergraduate research in journalism, media and communi- cations. The School of Communications at Elon University is the creator and publisher of the online journal. The second issue was published in Fall 2010 under the editorship of Dr. Byung Lee, associate professor in the School of Communications. The three purposes of the journal are: • To publish the best undergraduate research in Elon’s School of Communications each term, • To serve as a repository for quality work to benefit future students seeking models for how to do undergraduate research well, and • To advance the university’s priority to emphasize undergraduate student research. The Elon Journal is published twice a year, with spring and fall issues. Articles and other materials in the journal may be freely downloaded, reproduced and redistributed without permission as long as the author and source are properly cited. Student authors retain copyright own- ership of their works. Celebrating Student Research This journal reflects what we enjoy seeing in our students -- intellectual maturing.

RACIAL SATIRE AND CHAPPELLE’S SHOW by KATHARINE P. ZAKOS Under the Direction of Mary Stuckey ABSTRACT This thesis examines Chappelle's Show’s use of racial satire to challenge dominant stereotypes and the effectiveness of that satire as a tool to achieve perspective by incongruity. I use a variation of D’Acci’s circuit of media study model to examine the institutional challenges and limitations on the show due to the context in which it was created, produced, and distributed; to interrogate the strategies employed by the show’s writers/creators to overcome these challenges through the performance of race; and to analyze the audience’s understanding of the use of racial satire through a reception study of the show’s audience. I argue that using satire often has the unintended consequence of crossing the line between “sending up” a behavior and supporting it, essentially becoming that which it is trying to discount, though this is not to say that its intrinsic value is therefore completely negated.
