I am truly honored to join you today during this the 2nd Commencement Ceremony of Riara University. I join you first as a scholar and a true believer in the immense potential of the African continent. From my first encounter with Africa as a student on exchange at the University of in the early 90s, I have come to love this great continent and to devote enormous amounts of my energy and time in supporting the economic and political transformation of the continent. The cornerstone of my contributions to Africa is in supporting empowerment of the people of Africa through transformative education.

During my tenure as a professor in many institutions across America and globally, I have come to appreciate the power and role of true scholarly excellence in changing the lives of human beings across the world. From innovations that make healthcare available and affordable, to research work that has shaped policy to make the world a more just society, true education and a never-ceasing pursuit for inquiry and empowerment through learning continue to fuel civilization and social-economic transformations of societies across world.

As you graduate today, I wish that you may open your eyes to the possibilities that exist right from your doorstep here in , to the utmost corners of the world.
