Fraserburgh will be keen to retain the trophy they won in such style last season.

But they are up against an Inverurie Locos side eager to lift the famous old trophy for the first time in their history.

It sets things up perfectly for what should be an intriguing encounter that should provide plenty of excitement and drama for both sets of fans.

Special thanks also to Huntly Football Club for agreeing to stage the final at Christie Park.

More often than not, the team who has the most desire reaps the rewards in these matches. We are the current holders of this cup, so it gives us an added incentive as we want to keep a hold of it and

put our name on it once again. Inverurie however, have never won this so no doubt they will also be determined to get their hands on it.

We have had an indifferent start to the league. A

few games we have lost and deservedly so. It was disappointing that our first two home games in the league ended up in defeat. look at the teams that are not in this final, you have

to look at this as an achievement.

Getting a trophy in the cabinet early in the season would be massive. Fraserburgh will be of course of the same mindset; a great achievement for Mark

Cowie in his early stages of management and we wish him all the best now and in the future.

Both teams have relatively young squads; cup finals do not come along often and you have to take the

opportunity when it arises. Nobody remembers runners-up. The reward will hopefully get the best out of both teams and sets us up for a game that both supporters should look forward to.

There is little doubt that the Aberdeenshire Cup is one of the most striking trophies in the whole of senior football and any team are rightly proud to display this magnificent trophy in their boardroom.

The competition itself is one of the oldest around and pre dates the highland League by five years so it goes without saying that it is steeped in history. In the early years of the competition there were three clubs that dominated, the original Aberdeen

FC, Orion FC and Victoria United FC between them they won the trophy every time from 1888 to 1903.

In that latter year though the three teams combined to form the present Aberdeen FC but the pattern remained the same. However there was a Above : Action from 2011 classic final, which saw the Vale shock in store in 1906 when Buchan side Peterhead come back from 4-2 down with 20 minutes to go to win the lifted the trophy and thus became the first team trophy 5-4 outwith the Granite City to achieve that feat.

The Jags hold on the trophy was quickly loosened Inspired by their local rivals success Fraserburgh the following season when a Burnett hat-trick became the next team to take the trophy out of helped the Broch to a 5-1 win. A 3-1 defeat of Keith Aberdeen when they defeated Buckie Thistle in in the semi set up a final against local rivals 1910/11. The competition resumed in 1945/46 with the

combatants once again being Buckie Thistle and The Dons were shocked in the first leg of the Peterhead. The Jags were victorious once again 1927/28 final by Fraserburgh who won 2-1 at thus successfully defending the trophy seven years Bellslea but in the return at Pittodrie Aberdeen ran after winning it. wild winning 7-1. After dominating the tournament Aberdeen then withdrew and would not return for Peterhead won the trophy in 1946/47 and then 47 years. The 1950s also saw Mother Nature wreak havoc with the tournament and cause controversary in the

process. The fun began in 1953/54 when the second leg of the first round tie between Buckie Thistle and Keith was not played. A fixture pile up then delayed completion of the competition until

1954/55 and when it resumed the Jags faced Aberdeen University in a one off game in the semi. The delay also meant that the Jags played their first round game from the 1954/55 competition before they played their 1953/54 semi final. All of

this resulted in the 1954/55 competition not being completed to April 1956 by which time the Jags had been knocked out of the following season’s cup by Fraserburgh.

There was also a mini delay in 1956/57 with the second leg of the final between Buckie Thistle and Fraserburgh held over to the start of 1957/58. Having to play the second leg brought derision as the Jags were 6-3 up from the first leg at Bellslea

so there was no chance of the Broch recovering to win the cup with Buckie also winning the second leg 5-2.

Above : Action from 2009 final as Buckie Thistle’s Donnie The dominant force in the 1960s was Peterhead as Munro (right) congratulates Stephen Bruce as the Jags storm they lifted the trophy 5 times during the period. to victory Other teams had their moments too with Vale They then retained the trophy the following year winning in 1961/62 and then again in 1965/66 where they saw off Buckie 6-3 over the two games by defeating Huntly but the decade was more or less dominated by the famous Buckie Thistle side of the last time this format was used. the time who won the trophy from 1952/53 to 1954/55 and in 1956/57. Keith were also winners Keith became the first team to win the one off final on two occasions securing the cup in 1957/58 by when they beat Deveronvale 5-0 at Kynoch Park. Back to the start of the decade though and it was defeating local rivals Huntly 5-2 on aggregate and then repeating the feat in 1959/60 this time joy for the Huntly as they lifted the trophy for the against Peterhead whom they stormed to victory first time ever when they defeated Buckie Thistle over in the second leg at Kynoch Park winning 4-0 2-1 on aggregate. after a 1 all draw in the first leg. There is one winner from the 60s that has not been

This avenged the previous season’s final where the mentioned. And that was Fraserburgh in 1963/64 Blue Toon had romped to a 7-3 aggregate victory and that season’s competition has gone down in against Keith with most of the damage coming at history for it is the only time the final has never been played. Fraserburgh were due to face Buckie Recreation Park where they won 5-1. Fraserburgh also had their moments during the decade when Thistle in the final but then events in Aberdeen they lifted the trophy in 1955/56 after a intervened causing the Jags to withdraw and the tremendous battle with Deveronvale. That directly Royal Park. Two minutes later and a high challenge from Steven Park on Willie West on the edge of the area saw the defender booked and gave Graham Johnston the chance to let fly. The red headed striker, primarily playing up top on his own despite having been a feature of the defence earlier in the competition, struck his shot well but it clipped the bar on its way over.

There was a penalty claim waved away at the other end when Mark Smith's hooked shot could well have struck a raised arm. Given the proximity of the defender to the ball when it was struck it was hard to tell from the stand if it was an arm it hit. The Locos began to exert pressure on the Broch goal as the game began to stretch in the dying stages but it remained hard to see where a goal was going to come from.
