Bilma Foundation supports students who want

to be trained as a midwife in de SNNPR,

Wednesday‘s consultation of pregnant women on March 16 2011 at Health Center, Hagere Selam, SNNPR

These women joined a research trial on their judgement about the quality of Health Care provision to pregnant women by the SNNP Regional Health Care.

Bilma Foundation is training midwives in South Ethiopia.

Bilma Foundation is contributing local authorities in the Southern State SNNPR in Ethiopia to diminish a shortage in health care for pregnant women in southern Ethiopia. The main goal is to train young women in those areas, where no midwife is working at present.

Since 2010 much attention has been focussed to improve medical care in rural areas. In four year tie the number of Health Centers has doubled (from 350 to 700). But this fact revealed the problem of adjusting the number of trained personnel distributed in these Health Centers. Especially in the most Southern ‘Zones’ (South Omo and ) obstetrical care is still somehow underdeveloped. In these two Zones there are still 48 Health Centers where no midwife is assisting the local staff. Bilma Foundation signed an agreement (MOU) with the SNNP Regional Health Bureau to train young women coming from these 48 locations. They will be trained as a midwife at two Health Science Colleges.

In May 2014 a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Bilma Foundation and the SNNP Regional Health Bureau, to cooperate in the training of midwives. Bilma Foundation will financially enhance facilities for promising young women to become trained. The SNNP Regional Health Bureau (RHB) helps with the selection of candidates. After graduation, these women will be appointed by the RHB at one of the 48 Health Centers, and pay for their salary. Only in this way it will be possible to influence the

shortage and to direct qualified personnel into these remote health care locations.

At this moment 18 young women are trained to become a midwife by our contribution. They all passed Elementary School plus two extra classes (= 10th grade) and fulfil the admission criteria for a three year College Training at a Health Science College. The Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’s Region(SNNPR) is training around 30 students every year to become a midwife, but there is no guidance rule where they originate from. With around 30 students the training goal is basically fulfilled. But with Bilma Foundation’s agreement yearly six extra students will be trained, by influencing the selections procedure from where they originate (to be admitted). And it is this adaptation about the locations in our plan where the selected students will be installed as a midwife.

Bilma Foundation has appointed a representative in the capital town , who is in close contact with the students and the deans of the Health Science Colleges where the students are studying. He has taken responsibility for the monthly payments of the students and the half yearly payments to the selected Education Institutes. His main contacts are the personnel planner and the vice president at the Regional Health Bureau.

Our expectation is that a number of 30 students will be trained in the coming five year. And hopefully with the help of our sponsors, this will be continued in another five years. In the end we hope to continue in that extend that at least in all - for our goal - selected 48 Administrative Areas one midwife will be installed, and that we are able to add some more, so that many of the Health Centers will be provided with one additional midwife.

Sponsoring.

On the moment is the training of 18 students secured by a contribution of a special fund. This institute that is sponsoring us now has insisted that there must be another contributor which is contributing for 50% in the project. This is not yet fully established, but for the education of two students (≈10%) another sponsor is taking care, named Stichting Adopteer een Vroedvrouw, Alkmaar, the Netherlands. Extra sponsoring has been established by private donations of persons who have showed special interest.

This means that Bilma Foundation is still looking for Dutch organisations and private persons helping us in fund raising for our project. You will help to change the life of our students, and of the pregnant women that will get skilled help in their neighbourhood.
