The campus is named Alcala Park after the Spanish university town where St. Didacus (i.e., Diego) spent much of his time. Complementing its splendid natural setting is the University's location just 1O minutes from downtown San Diego conve niently close to the major business, cultural, residential, and recreational areas, as well as the rail, bus and air terminals. Founded in 1949, USO is presently experiencing record attendance. Undergraduate enrollment stands at 3,900 and graduate students bring the overall campus enrollment to 6,000. The University includes a College of Arts and Sciences, and Schools of Business Administration, Education, Nursing and Law. Each is characterized by high academic standards, small classes, and excellent student-faculty relations. Though the majority of students come from the West Coast, every region of the United States is well-represented on cam pus. Students also attend USO from 24 foreign countries. In January of 1987, USO opened the doors to the Earnest and Jean Hahn University Center, a 74,500 square foot building for students, faculty and staff. The two-level Center is the largest building on campus. Recreation, intramural and athletic activities are expanding rapidly. Among the many recreation and intramural programs offered, some of the favorites include: Mission Bay Aquatic Center activities (water skiing, surfing, sailing and crew), mod ern dance, aerobics, bowling, karate, backpacking, softball, tennis, floor hockey, volleyball and many more. USO intercollegiate sports for men include football, soccer, cross-country, , baseball, crew, tennis and golf. In women's intercollegiate sports, USO fields programs in volley ball , cross-country, swimming, basketball, softball, crew and tennis.

CUNNINGHAM INDUCTED INTO ABCA HALL OF FAME

HeadCoachJohnCunningham, alongwithfiveothercoaches, was inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association's Hall of Fame in early January. This is the highest honor the ABCA awards and coach Cunningham joins a most prestigious group of baseball greats. The formal induction came on January 5, 1991 , at the Hall of Fame-Coach of the Year Banquet in New Orleans. He now joins 142 other amateur baseball coaching greats in the ABCA Hall of Fame. Members of the associaton - other coaches - vote on who to add to the Hall of Fame each year. "That's what's really special, getting recognition from peers," says Cunningham, who has coached at USO since 1964 and enters the 1991 season with 624 career victories. "People like me don't usually get this kind of recognition,· he adds. "It's usually the people with the gaudy records that do." Cunningham has been an active member in the ABCA for 27 continuous years. Besides his 27 years of coaching USO, Cunningham also coached 14 years in the Collegiate Baseball League where he won over 300 games and 6 cham pionships. Cunningham's USO teams have won thirty or more games six times and four of his teams have gone to post-season playoffs. Two of those four became regional champions and College World Series participants. His 1971 team won the regional title while setting the school record of 34 wins - for that performance Cunningham was named District VIII "Coach of the Year.· Nine of his players have been named All-American and two were selected to represent the United States in interna tional competition. Among the more prominent players Cunningham has sent into professional ball are John Wathan, an All-America selec tion in 1970, who is now the manager of the Kansas City Royals and outfielder Kerry Dineen, a two-time All-American at USO who played in the Yankees organization. One of the reasons Cunningham has stayed on at USO for so long is his philosophy of academics and athletics falls perfectly in line with the university's. He is a firm believer that academics and athletics are not incompatible and that student-athletes can do both and do both well. Approximately 90.0 percent of his student-athletes that stay in the program for four years graduate on time - and many of them are now lawyers, doctors and businessmen. He has done so much for the school, that in January of 1988, the university honored him with an elegant dinner party, invited 400 of his doses! friends - many being ex-players of his - and then announced that it was renaming the baseball field after him: CUNNINGHAM BASEBALLSTADIUM. John Cunningham is a man who has devoted his life to teaching the game of baseball, and more importantly, in helping all his players set and attain goals, and in directing and preparing them for life after college. The American Baseball Coaches Association couldn't have picked a better person for their Hall of Fame than John Cunningham. Congratulations J.C. - from all of us whose lives you have touched over the past 28 years at the University of San Diego. HallofFame Page3

Head Coach Page4 JOHN CUNNINGHAM Head Coach Head coach John Cunningham is beginning his 28th season at the helm of the USD baseball program. With 14 winning seasons under his belt, John carries a record of 624-629-14 into the 1991 campaign. A nati ve of San Diego, Cunningham attended St. Augustine High School where he was a scholastic and athletic standout receiving AII -CIF honors in basketball and leading the County in scoring during his junior and senior seasons. Cunningham attended the University of San Francisco where he again was a baseball and basketball standout, while also making the Presidents' Honor Roll six times and achieving membership in the National Jesuit Honor Society, "Alpha Sigma Nu." He received his B.S. degree in History as well as a general secondary credential . In basket ball, John was named All-Conference and Honorable Mention on the Catholic All-America teams. In his senior year, Cunningham was USF's "Athlete of the Year." In 1960, as a member of the armed forces all-star team, John was a participant in the U.S. Olympic Basketball Tryouts. Baseball cornered him a contract with the Baltimore Orioles after graduating from USF. John began his career at USD in 1962, with 1989 seeing him win his 600th game. His teams have won thirty or more games six times, first in 1971 , then back to back in 1978, 1979, 1980 and 1981; and again in 1987 (31-23-1). Four of his teams have gone to post-season playoffs; two of the four becoming regional champions and College World Series participants. The 1971 team won the regional title while setting the school record of 34 wins. For that performance, Cunningham was named District 8 "Coach of the Year." 1979 was Cunningham's first effort atthe Division I level. Contrary to expectations, he guided the Toreros to an impressive 32-19-1 record and fourth place finish in the Southern California Baseball Association. In 1985 the Toreros moved into the West Coast Conference-with 1990 seeing them finish 16-17 in league action. John and his wife Nancy have one son, Geoffrey, age 16. Head coach John Cunningham, entering his 28th season at the helm, returns 14 lettermen from last year's squad. His infield and outfield will be manned by players with at least one full season of major college experience. In most cases, each position will be at least two deep with talented players. The pitching staff is another story. Just one player with starting experience returns. Senior James Ferguson, who started 14 times in 1990, will anchor the staring rotation. The 6'7" righthander, who was 3-4 a year ago, was USD's "Rookie of the Year· as a freshman in 1988. He will be joined in the rotation by junior righthander Pat Crema, 0-2 in 1990, and freshmen Mike Austin and Sean Durbin, the only lefthander on the staff. Additional starters may well come from a corps of long relievers that include junior transfer Glen Yannotta, sophomores Marc Bouchard and Kevin Herda and freshmen Pete Schoen and Chris Collins. The bullpen is the domain of 1990 co-MVP Tom Cheek. Cheek, a senior, set a USD single season record last year with his 37 appearances. He compiled 8 saves and a 7-6 win/loss record. He also fanned a team high 68 batters in over 85 innings of work. Junior Sean Gousha returns for his third season as the Toreros' starting catcher. He batted .265 last season and was voted US D's "Gold Glove Award" winner for defensive excellence by his teammates. He will be backed up by senior Steve Stumpf! and freshman Craig Ross. Experience is the key in the infield, starting at first base. Co MVP Rick Doane returns for his final season as a Torero. He banged out 13 home runs and hit a team high .342. He also made only one error in the field for a .998 fielding percentage. Second base will belong to either Tom Cheek or junior Jim Keen, the 1989 "Gold Glove Award" winner. Shortstop will be entrusted to sophomore Chad Boyd, a fine gloveman, while third base will be patrolled by sophomore Dave Pingree, who had a 16 game hit streak on the way to a .306 batting average in 1990. The outfield will be manned by two experienced ballhawks and an exciting newcomer. Senior Devin Bundy (.297, 3 HR) moves from rightfield over to left. Freshman Josh Stepner, an AII-CIF selection last season at San Diego High School, moves to centerfield. Sophomore Tony Moeder, last season's centerfielder and a .308 hitter, moves over to rightfield. Outfield depth will be provided by senior Dan McAdoo , a three-time USD "Hustle Award" winner, as well as freshman Mike Henry and junior college transfer Ed Scofield. When not pitching, sophomore Kevin Herda will be called upon to handle the Designated Hitter chores. Herda drove home 45 runs and banged out 7 home runs to go with a .330 batting average. Experienced in the field, behind the plate and at the bat. That's the story line of the 1991 University of San Diego Toreros' baseball team. If the pitching comes through - and the experi enced players play true to form - then 1991 might be the season that brings the Toreros toward their goal, an upper echelon finish in the West Coast Conference. It should be interesting! Seniors Page8 4 Tom Cheek, P/IF

The WCC has continued to prove itself as one of the stron gest collegiate baseball conferences in the country. Loyola Marymount was the league's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Regionals in 1990 while both LMU and Pepperdine represented the wee in 1989. Other conference members indude the University of Nevada, the University of San Diego, the University of San Francisco, and St. Mary's College. In 1990 Loyola Marymount broke a string of five straight WCC baseball championships set by Pepperdine. Pepperdine had won or shared every conference title since 1974 -a span of nine straight WCC crowns. The Waves won three before baseball was dropped as a conference sport after the 1976 season and continued to win titles when baseball was reinstated with a tournament in 1984 and round-robin format in 1985. Baseball was originally established as a conference sport in 1968. However, from 1977 through 1984, wee teams com peted with teams from the PCAA in the Northern California Baseball Association (Nevada, St. Mary's, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Pacific, San Jose State, Fresno State), and the Southern California Baseball Association (Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, and San Diego from the WCC). For the second straight year, the WCC will play a 36-game round robin schedule with the league champion receiving the WCC's automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs.

•wee Champion Director of Athletics Page40

TOM IANNACONE Director of Athletics Tom Iannacone is in the midst of his third year as the University of San Diego director of athletics. He assumed the position Sep tember 1 , 1988 after a nationwide search . The 49-year-old Iannacone has made great strides in his first two years. His accomplishments at USO indude an ongoing internal reorganization of the athletic de partment, plus improvements in the major areas of new per sonnel, additional scholarship assistance, facilities improve ments, promotions and marketing, fund raising, drug education and academic support. Iannacone came to the University of San Diego with an impressive list of credentials and a thorough knowledge of intercollegiate athletics. Prior to USO, he was Director of Athletics for four years at St. Francis College in Loretto, Penn sylvania. Hard work, loyalty and dedication are just some of the words that easily describe Iannacone. His major contributions at St. Francis included the expansion of sports offerings and scholar ships for both men and women, improved budgets, renovation of athletic facilities, the hiring of additional staff, and the estab lishment of a master plan for the future and continual develop ment of athletics. He served on several committees, most notably the ECAC Infractions committee and the Northeast Conference committee on conference development, which developed a plan for the future and implemented the position for a full-time commissioner. Currently Iannacone serves as a consultant to the NCAA I-AAA Football Committee. Prior to his tenure at St. Francis, Iannacone served as assistant athletic director at Fordham University from 1977-84. Along with his administrative duties at Fordham, he was an assistant football coach for the Rams. From 1975-78, he acted as offensive coordinator and backfield coach as Fordham captured 19 victories in their final 24 games during this span. The 1977 squad was and remains the highest scoring team in Fordham history, averaging 34 points per game. In 1983, Iannacone was presented the prestigious Jack Coffey Award by the Alumni Association for outstanding contri butions to Fordham athletics. He has also served on various Metro Adantic Athletic Conference committees. Prior to Fordham, Iannacone taught physical education and coached track and football in the Ridgefield, Norwalk and New Milford (CT) school districts from 1964-76. He made his colle giate football coaching debut as an offensive backfield coach at Western Connecticut State University in 1974. A 1964 graduate of the University of Connecticut, Iannacone received his master of science degree in physical education from Southern Connecticut State University in 1973. Tom and his wife, Cynthia, have three children: Tom Jr. and Jennifer, both students at USO, and Eric, a Poway High School senior. We would like to thank the following 1990 and 1991 members of TORERO DUGOUT CLUB
