“John isn’t going to like this. He’s always complaining about the lack of space in the front seat!”The Motor 23 October 1963 Modern Motor, July 1957 Page 2 September 2019 President’s Report It is with great excitement for Shepparton to see the new Museum of Vehicle Evolution receive the funding and approval from the Greater Shepparton City Council to enable commencement in October 2019. This will no doubt be a massive financial injection to the Shepparton area with the extra visitation expected – great news !! Also reminder 1st September 2019 Emerald Bank Annual Heritage Rally and Market Day require some support from our club with vehicle displays and/or voluntary help parking , cooking, etc. Please contact Helen on 0439 369999, thank you. Greg Sutherland, President of the Building Committee, has the okay from the Committee to beautify the entrance to our club grounds by way of garden beds, shrubs, etc and possibly an improved identifying sign for our Club Rooms. Thank you Greg and your committee for the initiative to improve our asset. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all sub committees, delegates and social club for your efforts, we all know the voluntary time involved to keep our great club progressing, and this thank you certainly does not exclude our office bearers and committee who all put a tremendous amount of their time and effort with the result of a viably sound, progressive happy club we all can enjoy. An air conditioner will be installed on the southern wall of the kitchen in the very near future, ducted along the kitchen to the northern wall towards the exhaust fan over the dishwasher. Still plenty of interesting rallies coming up thanks to John, Hughie and Peter so pump the tyres up, brush off the dust and have some fun!! A reminder due to the swap meet on the 8th of September, the next General Meeting is brought forward to the 5th of September – look forward to seeing you at both events. Bev and I will be taking a quick trip to Bundaberg Qld in mid-October to attend our grand daughter’s wedding, and very much looking forward to the occasion. For the members returning from the north, welcome home. Do hope members are well and happy, for those members who are not in this situation our thoughts are with you. See you at the meeting. Don’t forget the subs are due. Regards, Neil Rutherford From the Editor The Swap Meet is this Sunday and the final (maybe) version of the rosters are on p24 of the Journal, so please check where you’re rostered and make sure you get there. If you can also help with the clean-up after the swap, that would be appreciated. Also included are Swap Meet instructions for those on the gates. Make sure you wear your name badge – it might be important when you want something to eat! Thanks to Neil Rutherford for his story about his A Model. It’s great to have the early history of a car that age. Thanks also for letting me drive it on the running board rally – it was great fun! With Neil’s report, rally reports and swap rosters, there wasn’t room for the AOMC and Federation reports. They’ll be in next month’s Journal. See you at the meeting on Thursday (early because of the Swap). Don’t forget to wear your name badge so everyone knows who you are. Brendan Walsh

Page 9 September 2019 Pride and Joy Neil and Bev’s 1928 FORD Model A tourer America unveiled the new Model A Ford on the 2nd of December 1927. Australia unveiled simultaneously in all capital cities on the 15th May 1928. The Tourer and Roadster initially sold for £210, the Coupe £305, the Tudor for £295 and the 30cwt Truck £260.

In 1928 Ford Motor Co of Canada Ltd exported to Australia 16,049 A Models. Our A Model permit number 7-075 with original engine and chassis number of 4684 (as per a specification card I have for all A Model cars) is a December 1927 build but was registered in Grenfell NSW in late September 1928.

This vehicle was purchased by Mr Thomas Harveyson, it being the third A Model sold  through Grenfell Motors NSW (see advertisement on p.12). Due to his trade as a carpenter Mr Harveyson removed the tub and converted the vehicle to a ute, and it was used for many years around Grenfell in his business.

£25 deposit receipt

Prior to the conversion, I have a black and white photo of the New A Model on their honeymoon , as supplied to me by his son John. We had spent a day with him in Grenfell collecting accurate information on the vehicle.

After some years the vehicle was sold on to Mr Harveyson 's brother-in-law (name unknown) and used extensively on his grazing property, even pulling a single-furrow plough!! After it had reached its “use-by-date”, the vehicle was parked under a pepper tree for six odd years until John Harveyson retrieved and commenced restoration of this dear old lady. Having completed most of the mechanical restoration, John’s bank account was running low, so he sold the vehicle on to Mr Ian Henderson who completed the job (well almost!) in 2004 .

Bev and I purchased our pride and joy in 2014 and put our improvement touch to it, such as new paint, new carby, new oil pump, new clutch, overhaul the gear box, overhaul shockers, new wheel bearings all around and added a few extras. Since restoration in 2004, the vehicle has completed 20,500 miles so we believe there is plenty of fun touring ahead for us.

Page 17 September 2019 Rally Report Running Board One Day Rally to Goorambat – Sunday 11th August 2019 As luck would have it, the weather was fine and the sun was shining. Clubroom departure at 9 30, a pleasant drive through the cropping area via Katandra West to St James silo art, but no coffee available!!! We drove on to Devenish, coffee at the pub, checked out the silo art, then on to Goorambat for lunch at the Pub. Brendan aimed our old A Model from St James around the Silo Art Trail to home, thanks Brendan for an enjoyable trip. I feel all 35 members who participated had a relaxed day driving at 40mph and we were able to witness a few more older cars on the run. Many thanks to all that brought casseroles to share, helped with dishes and pack up. This help is always very much appreciated.

Many thanks to Thurlie for offering to do the Journal entries for the next two months while John and myself are away on holidays.

Rally Report Pub Run, Cobram – 18th August 2019 Our Pub Run to Cobram on 18th August 2019 was to the Cobram Hotel, where we had 24 members turn out for yet another excellent meal in very good surroundings. The weather was also excellent making the drive to and from the venue in our cars very pleasant. I can’t thank Peter Braham enough for arranging these pub lunches. The likes of Peter and Hughie organising their excellent runs certainly makes the Club Captain’s job a lot easier. Page 21 September 2019 Rally Report Mid-Week Coffee Run to Benalla / Swanpool – Wednesday 14th August 2019 Our Coffee Run this month was to the Benalla Art Gallery and then to the Scrap Art exhibition at Swanpool. A few members enjoyed coffee with the group before embarking on their own itinerary and 29 others headed for Swanpool. The Scrap Art exhibition was amazing. The artists showed amazing creative talents and workmanship. Some exhibits were obviously done by professional artists but the majority were created by amateurs. The Swanpool and District Community Development Association who put on the Scrap Art exhibition are all volunteers who did a wonderful job. The group offered a meal option with a number of meal choices, our members all enjoying a meal and maybe a glass of wine with it. Two other art exhibitions in nearby halls were also enjoyed by our members. These consisted of paintings and art works by the Broken River Painters in oils, pastels, watercolours, acrylics, scratchboards, etchings, cut paper, sculpture, ceramics and textiles. I am sure our members who attended all enjoyed the day.
